Yeah, he messed up, but no way would he have won comfortably. Didn't have much left, else he would have never sat down with barely 100m to go.

Even if Julian almost screwed this again, MVDP did lost it by himself.

He boxed himself in, I'm pretty sure he would have won it looking at how he came back really stronger on the last meters.

I'm happy that the reigning world champion, who is worthy of the shirt and races offensively, doesn't make a fool out of himself twice in a row.

It's also good to see that MVDP can make mistakes and can be defeated in a finale like this. It makes him more human.
