TJ for me, maybe not the highest quality Tour but stepped well into top 10 class(however momentarily that may be for).

Pinot or Quintana walk the pole next year.

Is Durbridge too young to be breaking out? In his first year he won his first ever pro race at Circuit de la Sarthe with just two remaining team mates to protect him. Then took out the Tour du Poitou-Charentes, followed by his prologue win against the big guns at the Dauphine. Third in the TTT World titles with OGE, 5th overall at Eneco and then winning the Duo Normand with Tuft.

Not sure if that classifies for a breakout year but must stand him in good stead in the best first year rider.
Apart from the Dauphine prologue, it was all in sh.t small races though. Same goes for Moser, to a lesser extent.

Moser for me, I knew this guy had some talent but certainly wasnt expecting this from him in his 1st year.

JTL in 2nd place

Quintana gets the last podium spot

Moser only rides a handful of races, does well in all of them. Easily one of the best first seasons :)

EDIT: He is 14th in CQ efficiency, right behing JTL.

I was surprised when I didn´t see Alessandro De Marchi:s (Androni) name in you list. Remember the two stages of Giro d´Italia in May when he made two huge breakaways. Not to mention all other during the rest of the season.

Seriously? A guy that has had one (1!) top10 placing on his own all season?

I don't think it constitutes a breakthrough year to be part of "two huge breakaways" - then a lot of riders could be considered having had breakthrough years.

I know he hasn't quite broken out to the level that some of the others have, but I really enjoyed what I saw of Roman Bardet, both in terms of his potential and the way in which he rides.

Moser over Quintana.

Degenkolb and Phinney had their breakout years last year.

Demare definitely the best breakout sprinter.

I selected Phinney. Silver in a world event and a Grand Tour leader jersey is more than I expected. However, I don't think he'll end up being the most accomplished rider on this list in 15 years.

Phinney having a breakout year last year??
He missed out on the classics and early season due to an injury.
Only had a stage win at the eneco tour and a top 10 in GC.
Had a 2nd in a romandie prologue and a 5th in a vuelta TT stage.
I don't think that is good enough for a breakout year.
He has made huge improvements this year from last year.

Moser takes this for me just in front of Quintana. Van Garderen, Pinot, Hesjedal, Degenkolb and Uran were all established pros at the beginning of the year, therefore should not be included and Pinot was actually more consistent last year

Bardet was a top U23 rider before so this does not come as a surprise. Plus his achievements this year are a lot more human than the freaklike performances of Moser.

Uhm, that's an argument for Moser. Not for Bardet.

Moser, Quintana, Phinney.
Hesjedal was known and so was Uran- though both did have great seasons.
Henao and Durbridge should have been included on this list.
Degenkolbs' was last year when he won twice at the Dauphine.
Pinot as well for last year at the Dauphine.
If Demare is on the list so should Bouhanni- Demare was more known for last year at the U23 WC.
No Domrowski- the best really young climbing prospect along with Chaves and Aru?
I agree with the TJVG pick though (some might say 2010 Dauphine as well but he finally proved his mature talent).

Poland was great though and had a nice field. That win over Nerz and Martin was amazing.

I think it should be between Quintana and Moser, and I'd personally go with Nairo.
