The press tells it's readers what they want to hear, which for the popular press means emotion-based nationalist rhetoric. The very last thing of interest to the popular press is to encourage their readership to pay attention to the details or, in other words, to engage with reality.

Even now the high street vox pops beloved of television news demonstrate that this tactic is still working. Half the nation is puffing out its chest in cognitive dissonance, and the other half are in despair.

Add to this mix party politics from the people steering this thing, and those supposedly tasked with holding them to account.

Jeremy Corbyn has written to the prime minister setting out his party's price for supporting a Brexit deal and to offer talks to secure "a sensible agreement that can win the support of Parliament and bring the country together".

The Labour leader's five demands include a "permanent and comprehensive UK-wide customs union" aligned with the EU's customs rules but with an agreement "that includes a UK say on future EU trade deals".

I think Brexit has turned from clown circus to "the Hokey Cokey" - in and out and shake it all about and lots of Rah, rah, rah! :)

Seriously, Labour wants to help Mrs May on Brexit. How smart is that? A bit of lapel clutching, national interests waffling aint going to go down too well amongst some of his own party members. Brexit is like quicksand - you try and help someone out and you'll go down too.

But the move was met with dismay by Labour members of the People's Vote campaign for another EU referendum, who accused Mr Corbyn of going back on his commitment, made at the party's conference, to back a public vote if he can't force a general election.

Labour MP Chris Leslie tweeted: "Seriously? Offering to help Tory Govt enable Brexit? It's not just Labour's conference policy in the bin.

"When the jobs go & revenues for services dry up as a result - Labour's leadership will have ZERO right to complain: they share responsibility."

A new Brexit Party has been officially recognised by the electoral regulator – and Nigel Farage has said he will stand as one of their candidates if the UK’s departure from the European Union is delayed.

The new party, which Mr Farage has put his weight behind, has been granted permission by the Electoral Commission to participate in upcoming elections.

It will be “mobilised” if Britain’s scheduled date of leaving the European Union – 29 March – is delayed by politicians.

Mr Farage said the new party “has my absolute full support” and added that he would stand for it in May’s European parliament elections if Britain has not left the EU by that point.

The former Ukip leader said the new Brexit Party should be viewed as a warning to MPs who have considered applying for an extension of Article 50, and insisted it would draw support from across the political spectrum.
Just when you thought it was safe to switch on the TV again. So is this the "torches and pitchforks" party to scare dithering Westminster MPs?

Some of the world’s poorest countries are being forced to agree potentially damaging trade deals with the UK by government “threats” in the rush to Brexit, campaigners say.

Liam Fox, the international trade secretary, is accused of piling pressure on developing nations to “sign up blind” – without knowing the value of the deals – with a warning they will otherwise be lost.
...
“This type of bad-faith negotiating – using implicit threats to get countries ‘over the line’ – is not a great way to start the UK’s independent trade policy.”

No developing country has gone public with criticism of the UK’s approach, but some are believed to have objected privately and displayed their unhappiness by refusing to re-sign the deals so far.

Bullying tactics and threats are Trump's M.O. too.

Gavin Williamson intends to argue in a speech at the Royal United Services Institute on Monday that a post-Brexit UK should redefine its role as a global power prepared to intervene against countries that “flout international law”, backed up by new military technologies and capabilities.
...
Williamson is expected to conclude: “Brexit has brought us to a great moment in our history. A moment when we must strengthen our global presence, enhance our lethality and increase our mass.”

What? "increase our mass"? "enhance our lethality"? Geezus! Just say more money to the military - though a "great moment in our history" might not turn out to be a positive thing.

Remember your reading the Daily Mail! And a man with a book to sell - more bashing too of Corbyn as anti-Semitic but it's "by pro-Corbyn supporters on an official Facebook page for a local Liverpool Labour Party constituency."

Somebody posting something dumb on Facebook - who would believe it?

Theresa May has two weeks to save her Brexit deal, after she suffered another embarrassing defeat in parliament.

The House of Commons voted on Thursday by 303 to 258 against a motion endorsing the prime minister’s approach to resolving the Brexit deadlock, after a revolt from Euroskeptics in her Conservative Party. The defeat effectively strips May of her political mandate to demand changes to the withdrawal agreement in Brussels, and suggests she has little chance of fending off an attempt by Parliament to take control of the process on Feb. 27.
...
While the prime minister’s office said in a statement her plan remains unchanged, she has until the end of the month to convince moderate members of her Conservative Party that she is capable of getting a deal through parliament before Britain crashes out of the European Union. Thursday showed she can’t even persuade her party to support her on a symbolic motion. That has left MPs who fear a no-deal Brexit wondering if they need to take the decision out of her hands.

There’s growing support for a cross-party plan to force May to take no-deal off the table. In a vote on Feb. 27 these MPs will begin the process of trying to pass a bill that would require May to seek an extension to Brexit talks if there’s no deal by March 13.

Is there an adult in the house? Even with a sensible deal and Brexit, the UK will suffer economically.

To dare to criticize Winston Churchill in 21st century Britain is to risk the ire and outrage of the collective power of the media, the public and ministers of state. For to do so is to challenge the greatest sacred cow of them all — the myth of “Britain’s finest hour.”
...
What Britain needs more than ever is less “Churchill history” and more actual history.

Perhaps a good place to start is in questioning the unassailable reputation of a man who was broadly disliked enough by many Britons during the war that they rejected him at the first post-war election.

“Unhappy the land that is in need of heroes,” wrote Bertolt Brecht. To which we might add, “and unnecessary referendums as well.”

Today, seven MPs have left Labour and formed a new, Independent Group. They’re from different backgrounds but are united in their belief that we can can #ChangePolitics. Find out more: https://t.co/H4O2NANKaq pic.twitter.com/eU3nGaDTTT

Things are afoot!

And they're already embroiled in a racism row...

How inept does one have to be to choose those words when citing racism as a primary justification for leaving the Labour party....especially when sat opposite a Novara (ie. momentum mouthpiece) journalist who is, herself, a funny tint.

Not sure, but I think there seven might just sink without trace....

I'd say I'm shocked but honestly, I don't think I'd find anything in Politics shocking at the moment. I'm waiting for the other 6 to disown her though, considering one of the reasons they left was because of a belief that there is institutional racism within the PLP.

I'm unsure if Ash would agree with that characterisation, I've not read enough of her work or heard enough from her to know.

I see Angela has apologised:

Of course, she apologises for causing offence, not for being offensive.
