Simon returned to competition in Switzerland today, and appears to have acquitted himself well in a tough 1.HC circuit race. Orica was working for Albasini to repeat in Gippingen, and reading between the lines of results and race reports, it seems that Simon must have been among those working to bring back the break that held on 'til almost the last lap. He finished thirteen seconds back, a fine effort on a day when more than fifty men (including Fabian Cancellara) decided to climb off their bikes instead of finish.

Edit: Cross-posting with Waterloo Sunrise makes me realize I neglected to give a shout out to Adam's fantastic ride today. Good day!

Folks here seem to certainly hope not.

How do neopros traditionally do in the Grand Tours? I doubt they participate very often, it seems a big ask.

It'd be great to see him get a chance but a ridiculous ask for him. This time next season OGE will be in a very strong position if he keeps on with improvements.

Tied 12th today ignoring breakaway riders (10th if you also ignore Sky doms) - great performance on such a long hard stage for someone so young.

Just a minute down on Nibali on a full gas from the bottom, hard day, train driven 8-10% climb

Phew! eurosport flashed up a provisional classification showing him out of the top 10

Would love it if he could stay in there. What a year he's having so far.

Koenig is a just few seconds back and presumably will try to attack tomorrow if he can. C'mon Adam!

Much shorter and easier tomorrow - should play to his punchy style, propensity to attack and his lack of years.

Both are well rounded riders already, with good support from the GB track team. It could get scary when they improve again, and then both enter the same race. Schlecks 2.0.

Has already exceeded Kelderman. Barguil, Talansky and Dennis in terms of recent GC neo-pro performances? Especially given his relative lack of road-race experience.

As a climber, can't think of anyone who's had a better first season??

If you look purely at GC it's going to be difficult. Sergio Henao technically got a top 10 in the Giro as a neo pro.

But not everybody targets GC's or gets the chance to target GC's as a neo-pro.

Barguil didn't target GC's, but he did win two stages in the Vuelta, which imo is more impressive as a neo-pro, than getting 6th in the Dauphine.

Quintana could only ride for himself in smaller races, but his performance in Route du Sud, his stage win in the Dauphine, his win in Emillia and his work as a domestique in the Vuelta for Valverde was definitely way way way more impressive than anything Yates has shown.

Nevertheless, the Yates brothers are huge talents that probably deserve more attention than they are getting. But there are a few climbers that can be argued to have a more impressive neo-pro year.

Quintana is a very hard comparison.

As a neo pro he won two 2.1s, came 2nd in another and won a 1.HC as well as a stage of a 2.WT.

However, in just over half a season Adam has won a 2.1, come 5th in a 2.HC and 6th in a 2.WT with very strong stage results in all of them - qualitatively it's on the same sort of level which you don't really expect to see more than 3 or 4 neo-pros hit in any given 5 year spell, so very promising.

Barguil's Vuelta stages, and indeed Quintana's Dauphine stage, were possible in part because they weren't a GC threat - I think Yates has shown enough to suggest he could have a good crack at similar results if he weren't so consistent at the moment.

If you remember the fashion in which Quintana won some of those races and if you remember the Vuelta he rode that year, you wouldn't say that.

Also I agree Yates is probably better than Barguil climbing wise, I just think Barguil is more impressive results wise. But so far Yates has definitely done more GC wise obviously and climbing wise too I guess.

He would have to have some GT results to be tops in my mind, but may not get the chance. And yeah, not even remotely close if you include Henao:

9th Giro
14th Vuelta
5th Lombardia
2nd Burgos
3rd Poland
9th Worlds

Henao was a 24.5 year old 'neo pro', its a pretty meaningless comparison.

Anyway, this isn't the who was the best neo pro thread, though that may be worth having.

Just watched the stage ending now - good to see he was just about the strongest left at the end (excluding Talansky who it's hard to judge) - towed Bardet the whole last km having made the gap himself.

Adam has really surprised me this year, not only because of his physical capabilities, he has also shown some smart racing and he seems to have a good tactical sense. Really looking forward to see his brother in action when he has recovered, he is a bit of the same type, just more powerful and less of a climber, right?
