Can't Get 1st Gear

Everytime I drop down into first gear, the chain doesn't catch it. It just keeps slipping. Then I have to quickly snap back up to second.

Is this something I can fix myself at home in the shed?

I'm assuming first gear is the smallest sprocket at the back? Look up a video on how to index a rear derailleur on YouTube, there are loads. Take you time and it's easy to do.

I'm presuming this is your first bike and you may be cross-chaining?

Otherwise what KB and jmd said - most of bike home repair I've learned I've learned from Youtube, and also Sheldon Brown's website. Sheldon Brown is a goldmine for bike repair/knowledge.
