I think the distance after the poggio is about right. Gives the sprinters a chance. Remembering that the pace was low this year up the climb and Nibali attacked quite late. If uphill specialists want a better chance they can go earlier. If they finished at the top Gerrans wins, if they finish 1km after the decent Gerrans wins, if they finish right on the bottom...we end up with a suicidal decent. So everyone can whinge about Gerrans winning but changes around the Poggio makes little difference.

True - in theory. But ironically, most of the years it has ended in a sprint the distance after the Poggio was about half of what it is now. My opinion is that the donkeys (= sprinters' teammates) that turned into racehorses are now back at being donkeys again.
The same kind of attacks as last Saturday happened 5-15 years ago as well, but a bunch of 30-50 was (almost) always there to pull them back. Now, Nibali's move (and Cancellara's monstrous descent, I'll give that) made the peloton go from 40-ish to a group of about 10.

This year would have ended in a sprint too without Cancellara. Nibbles and Gerrans couldn't make it at all. And last year ended in a sprint too (the selection was made more by the crashes than by the attacks). I think bringing back the finish in Via Roma would be slightly better. A descent finish would be too dangerous... Imho the best option would be having the finishing line 1-1.5 kms to the end of the descent
