So again some setbacks for Chris in 2023. Fortunately there's still a lot of time to prepare for the TdF in 2024...or better in 2025. Remco won't have it easy even when the July mutants decline.

Well, no Tour of Hungary, but that‘s not the end of the world for Froome.

May, for the TdF starters normally is the month of altitude preparation anyways. Chris now needs to get healthy, and will have a period of training, before he heads to Dauphine and TdF.

I also consider 2023 rather as a „gap“ year. It‘ll be about getting the miles, also the hard miles, in. Then 2024 might finally be the year for TdF #5… It‘ll be about Remco vs Froome, then… :)

Yes, I made a similar point in another thread regarding the world snooker final. Snooker logic dictates a Remco-Froome showdown in 2024

I appreciate Froome has fans. But can we stop talking about his capacity in GTs will, at some future point, become relevant again? It won't

You need to appreciate the not-so-subtle dose of sarcasm & humor in those posts. Froome has earned those sorts of comments insofar as he placed $$$ over his racing reputation.

Tbh there wouldn't be 98% of these joke if he didn't constantly feed the trolling himself with "nose to the grindstone" posts & other comments about a 5th TdF.

I mean it's absurd & he invites mockery himself.

Geraint Thomas‘ super performances at current Giro will give Froomey a huge morale boost. After all, the two always have been like brothers.

I think this could now be the deciding factor, to again believe in project #5, to happen coming July. „G“ wins the Giro, and Froome the Tour, afterwards - very much possible, now…

Yes, this will motivate Froomey even more. Not sure if he's had enough hard miles in his legs for this edition but next year he'll be #1 contender!

Hope to see him doing well today. His team and FDJ are working. It woukld be great if he is better than Carapaz, but that is not easy, becouse Carapaz should be fighteen for victory here if he want to be on the podium at Td france.

If anybody wants to watch the Mercan Tour live it is currently being broadcast on the French Eurosport 1 channel.
I have the ability to stream thousands of channels to my tv and I just caught Number 2 Chris Froome hanging onto the rear of the peloton as it crested the penultimate climb.
Head down and spinning furiously it looked like he was in survival mode.
They are now on the mini-descent before another kick up (it will be interesting to see if Froome can remain attached there) before the big descent to the foot of the final climb.
The French commentators were just saying something about Froome, but unfortunately I could not understand the details.

Mercan Tour update: Chris Froome survived a mini-split in the leading peloton of 25 riders and is back on as a torrential downpour suddenly breaks out as the final long descent of the day into the concluding climb begins.
I don't think this is going to be a breakout race for Froome.
He is not capable of riding in front of team leader Fuglsang to assist him and was consistently in third-last place, just hanging in there.
I expect him to be dropped relatively early on the final climb, judging by the form I see.
22 KM to go!

Sadly, as the final climb began and with 11.6KM to go Chris Froome became detached from the leading group and we have the familiar sight of the camera bike focusing on his lonely figure as he spins along solo.
French commentators having a big chat about him as the head of the race is ignored and the camera sticks on the detached Froome.
Similar to last year's Mercan Froome stayed with the best riders until the foot of the final climb and just could not stay with them.

Is this not logical? He managed third in a TDF stage despite having to abandon the Dauphine before the mountains and recover from illness. He looks even stronger now than at the same point last year.
I'd say he looks about the same. Losing 3:36 to the winner instead of 3:58 is not much of an improvement.

No he doesn't?

It just seemed like typical current year Froomey tbh. Strong enough to ride tempo with the peloton & then as soon as the real racing starts, he gets dropped. He was already on the limit going over the previous climb (hanging on in there at the back).

I am curious to see what sort of talent Israel has in their ranks though, because a rider like Derek Gee in the Giro showed a hell of a lot more promise & cause for optimism in that team than their soon-to-be retirees have ever done.

More Gee & riders like that, less Froome & Fuglsang. That should be Israel's goal going forwards.

As I predicted in the thread of the race when he droped at the begining of the last climb with about 25 riders remaining on the group, he will be top 15, better than his team leader and last year winer Fuglsang. He was finnally 14, losing less time with the winer Catrapaz than last year. Last year he came from a decent Romandia, at least the last climb ITT, but this year he did worse there (due to a Knee injury the previous period).
So, how know, he could give a similar step at Tour de Suisse, and that would be a serious level.

This high spin make him finish very strong at the end, but if he cant keep the pace at the begining of the last climb, he lost any chance to win, becouse means to be alone from far...with just someone helping him when he droped, he would have been top 8 today

Maybe, but he has also had less proper racing than last year due to injuries in April which meant the only other race he has done in the last 3 months is Romandie where he limped around.
Sure it isn't necessarily a bad sign at all, if the next month goes according to plan.
