Sounds like some substantial injuries and including head injuries. All the end of season things, end of career things won't happen. Don't know how serious his back injury is but will require careful rehabilitation. Terrible news on top of everything else going on.
 
How will this affect his contractual position?

Well, his contract expires at the end of the year, and - to be rather cynical - I suppose if his contract wasn't already unlikely to be extended, it definitely is now. After all, while I think there have been cases with riders getting contract extensions right after serious injuries - Jakobsen springs to mind - Froome's age sort of... works against him.
Otoh, I also think it would be wrong for his contract to be stopped with immediate effect.
 
When I wish Chris Froome a full recovery it is so he can physically engage in life as a father with two children with so many years in front of him, not to see him back on the bike racing at a pro level.
I think many of the get well soon messages reflect these wishes.
Considering we really haven't seen him racing at pro level for at least the past few seasons you should get your wish either way.
