1. I have to wonder how much of a priority ToC was for the TRS-80's given it's 'the' U.S. race. The sponsor would be most pleased.
2. The depth of the field at ToC is not great. Expect gaps to happen.
3. That 'no name' American was nationally ranked cross country runner or something like that before getting on a bike. The beauty of doing well in hills is it doesn't require much skill, just a powerful motor. The guy would likely get eaten alive on serpentine European roads.

Did you see him descending Mt Hamilton (the Sierra Rd stage)?

It was not pretty.

Even so, he can climb.

I enjoyed the calculations from the #45 post via google.
Horner's output didn't seem ridiculous (but it was high!) for someone who has presumably oriented his training for 1 prior week long GC ride and then the ToC and will just put in training miles for the TdF from now on.

If you start from the premise that only old guys dope and all the new, young guys are clean, I have an aluminum road bike I can sell you for a lot. An awful lot of $. It rides buttery smooth and one size fits all.

Chris is probably the most interesting American to interview in ages. Listening to him analyze race strategy with a smile on his face in the TOC was great fun. He's a perfect natural for TV when he retires in another 10 years.

Chris is unctuous in the extreme when interview post stage when he has won the stage or has the leaders jersey.

Almost to Mark Cavendish frodo scale.

But he is better copy than most riders, and does lend an insight, when he is not going down the disingenuous bad faith spot to camera route

He's going for early retirement then? :D
