Sadly the law of 6 degrees of seperation has made itself felt here.
The cousin of the best friend of a co-worker here was killed in a bus in Christchurch...

On the one hand it has nothing to do with any of us here in the office in Melbourne but on the other there is clearly a quite dark mood here since we found out yesterday.

Sad news indeed. I hope that this thread stays relevant with updates, even if they are tragic, so they we don't lose sight of what the people in New Zealand are going through.

However, Martin, you really do need to considering changing your avatar. This is not the first time that it has come across as completely inappropriate to the subject at hand.

Point taken - the problem with avatars on this system is that even if I waited a year to change it back to a jokey one, it would once again appear jokey on my posts here.

regardless - my apologies to anyone who may be offended by my avatar in this thread.

New Zealand hit by further earthquake
Quake of 4.5 magnitude strikes 12 miles north-west of the capital, Wellington, as country holds day of mourning

I don't think I've ever been that nervous about an earthquake that mild.
Six-months ago hardly anybody here in Wellington would have flinched at a quake of last night's intensity (a long low rumbling as it approached and then a single quick jolt before quickly tailing off). But last night (I had just gone to bed) the immediate thought was are feeling the edge of something big centred down in Christchurch again? Big relief that it wasn't.

Stay Well Mates

All Canadians wish our friends in Christchurch the best. With your indomitable spirit you will all get through this. Please accept our condolences and sympathies to the families of the dead and injured.

More earthquakes...

Monday, June 13, 2011

New Zealand was struck by two major earthquakes, with the first hitting 1 p.m. (New Zealand time) Monday followed by four minor earthquakes in the afternoon.

So far, there have been no reports of fatalities but the police have seen injuries.
The largest earthquake that hit Christchurch measured a magnitude of 6.0.

Christchurch Mayor Bob Parker told the New Zealand radio, “Thank God, we had evacuated the whole of red zone; there's been quite clearly a more significant building collapse in there.”

“We are just now being enveloped by dust blowing out of the central city; we are just outside the cordon. This time a plethora of sirens have gone off .... car sirens, building sirens, it's just terrible.”

This is Christchurch’s third recent earthquake with the first one hitting on September 4 and the second on February 22 which resulted in 181 deaths.

Fine thanks Granville57. The sun is shining anyway.

The latest quake (now revised to a 6.3) was a little further from the city, so not quite as bad. There were only 2 people seriously injured, because most of the built up areas were already closed. It's certainly a relief that more of the construction workers weren't hurt though, because this one was another solid nudge.

We only got a tiny bit of liquefaction at our place, so it seems that the dire stinking appalling viscous insidious **** is more localized than February. For anyone who hasn't seen any footage, this is a good clip of liquefaction reaching the surface.

This has all been quite a learning experience I must say. On September 4th 2010, we thought that it was a simple matter of waiting a few days till the aftershocks stopped, then putting things back together with a higher standard of construction. Doh - waiting a few years is more accurate. It's amazing what you get used to too; I don't crap myself anywhere near as bad when the bigger ones hit now. Prolly a good thing cause the fat lady[sic] keeps coming back for encores.

oh gosh just saw this. Thanks for the heads up post Granville...

I Watch Cycling..good to hear you are ok and hopefully will hear from some more folks as to their situation. :(
