poor Guardini must be terrified by the prospect of 17 years getting dropped on climbs).

Guardini just needs to become 'top sprinter', like fellow Italians, Petacchi and Cipo before him. Then the mountains all magically disappear from the Giro and 15 flat stages appear (see, for example, 2004 Giro)

9th, when he was 35, so Cav has 9 years to match him. Of course, he probably won't on that race, but his palmares is going to stand up perfectly well whenever he decides he can't be arsed any more (presumably a little earlier than the current trend for Italian patriachs - poor Guardini must be terrified by the prospect of 17 years getting dropped on climbs).

Cav did an interview where he talked about wanting to win De Ronde, plus the very loaded addition that he's achieved every other goal he's set for himself.

This one would look to be a bridge too far, though to be fair that statement was at the end of 2009, and when you consider his penultimate Tour win that year you can forgive him being ambitious. He hasn't shown anything close to that level of climbing legs since, sadly.

That's a truly awful list. Neymar and Rooney are the 3rd and forth most remarkable athletes from football? F1 drivers?

whoever decided that list is mentally ***

It's not awful, it's actually quite well thought out (by people who know far more about these things than you or I).

It's based on who will be the most marketable (not remarkable) over the next few years. Rooney is the biggest player in arguably the world's most popular football team (worldwide). Neymar is the new Brazilian sensation (it might not work out). Same with the NFL draft picks.

F1 drivers are always big. The sport is popular all over the world, and well promoted. They attract huge sponsorship money.

Others are in there for specific reasons - e.g. Jess Ennis at no.12. Heptathlon isn't that big, but she'll be promoted as the face of London 2012.

Cipollini calls Cavendish ‘fat’

Mario Cipollini had some harsh words for Mark Cavendish in his daily column in La Gazzetta dello Sport. First, he criticized HTC for leaving Cavendish isolated in the sprint before questioning the Manxster’s commitment to his profession.

“Mark is being mismanaged. I do not believe he’s 100 percent devoted to his profession and, in fact, he’s fat. How is it possible that someone as talented as him has only won three races this season?”

No word yet from Cavendish, who will line up as the hot favorite for victory in Thursday’s flat stage to Ravenna.

(from velonews)

man love for Cipo calling it like he sees it. he should also say he got way better looking chicks than cav

Wasn't Cav in with a shout at G-W this year until a crash near the end? I think his best mate Ventoso crashed which meant he was out of contention.

Of all the belgian classics I'd say G-W is one he could win. However, for him to win he needs a very strong team completely devoted to getting him the win.

He said after this years race that "This is one race I really want to win".

Cipo would have smashed Cav, who is now regularly beaten by his own lead out riders. also Cipo is far better looking (by his own admission).

oh really. when did that happen then.

because cav sucks on cobbles. cipo even did a top ten in tour of flanders I believe

Why would that matter? Gent-Wevelgem got maybe 1 kilometer of cobblestones, he could have won it quite easily this year already.

yeah but a couple of cobbled hellingen + hard racing > Poggio and Cipressa and not so hard racing

:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:
You cannot be serious.

Ghent Wevelgem has only one cobbled climb x2.

Capo Berta >Any Wevelgem climbs. So, no need to talk about the Poggio, the Cipressa, the Manie and the Turchino.

298km >>>>>>>>> 235km

Milan Sanremo > Tour of Flanders >>>>>>>>> Ghent-Wevelgem
