Richard Freeman's marginal gains

richard freeman's time as head of sports science and medicine at football club bolton wanderers (2001-2008) is interesting.
he introduced new techniques such as this one:
Wanderers players will this season be regularly stepping into a frost-lined chamber where the temperature has plunged to minus 120 degrees Celsius - far colder than Antarctica.

The radical treatment will enhance muscle recovery after training, claims Richard Freeman, Bolton's new head of sports science and medicine, and it is part of the new fitness regime.

Freeman said: "It's made from liquid nitrogen and liquid oxygen mixed to the right proportion to become liquid synthetic air. It's quite safe despite the temperatures.

"It's still in its infancy but players benefit. It's like stretching before a game. There's little scientific evidence why it works but it clearly does.

An ambitious doc he was:
Freeman said: "Training has changed. We do more gym sessions, hot and cold contrast bathing and the cryotherapy. When you're at the forefront you can refine it. You're always ahead of the game. But a lot of clubs will not be prepared to invest. They'll see it as a step too far until it has become mainstream in five years. That's a long time to hold an advantage.
...If I heard about a better-prepared team, I'd be very disappointed and I'd want to know why."

the wikipedia of bolton wanderers shows that the time with freeman as chief doctor (2001-2008) overlaps with one of the most successful periods in the history of the club
Between 2003–04 and 2006–07, Bolton recorded consecutive top-eight finishes, a record of consistency bettered only by the big four of Chelsea, Manchester United, Liverpool and Arsenal.

Following Peters, Freeman also interviewed Leinders before Sky appointed him:

Freeman is also the guy who told Walsh that Froome's pre-2011-vuelta data show no (major) discrepancies wrt the vuelta and after.

What else do we have on this guy?

There have been studies on lighting in the workplace.

In the first study, the light levels were increased.

Productivity improved.

In the second, follow-on study, light levels in the same environment were decreased.

Productivity improved.

The moral: Attention to people improves productivity.

Dave.

Interesting.....my recollection of Bolton at that time was they were the most physical side in the Premiership. I had put that down to the managers style of playing and signings, but now you mention it:confused:

Bolton had an excellent reputation under Allardyce at the time for their medical and sports science department. Sniper might think this is some new news but they had a huge staff in this area and this was well highlighted back then in the media. It was up there with the best in the Premiership. Allardyce is a sticker for all this.

I'm not surprised in the slightest to hear some the above. He's not Leinders, I'm glad to say.

A case similar to muamba,s had happened already at bolton jn 2004 when freeman was there

You're out of order here. If I'm not mistaken that happened in a League Cup game. He had those heart problems at Inter. I know what you're implying, take it back now.

I was just posting some bits and pieces related to Freeman and since I'm far from a medical specialist I have to leave it to others to connect dots, if at all there are any dots to connect. I know cardiac arrests happen and not necessarily related to doping.
otoh, I do think the parallels between Fadiga and Muamba are interesting.

and of course I think Bolton were on a program whilst Freeman was there (in the article I linked Gary Speed explains how extremely fit he felt at the age of 38), but that's about the only assumption I am making.

The question is this: does Freeman strike you as a guy who would interview Leinders, quizz him about doping, and recommend him to Brailsford only after Leinders assured him he has had nothing to do with doping?
Because that's what Walsh and Sky want us to believe.
I don't know about you, but that certainly insults my intelligence (and i'm not that intelligent in the first place).

I know Fadiga well( he scored against us in Highbury when Auxerre beat us in CL) and those problems were at Inter. That's why he ended up at Bolton as no other bigger club would take him on due it. If you're saying it's not necessarily related to doping, why post it here? It's pretty clear what you're implying and it's frankly disgusting.

Because Speed says he's fit at 38, isn't a smoking gun he or Bolton are doping.

Freeman was a doctor at Bolton, he would probably know little about Rabobank's doping down the years during that time. Leinders denied it and de Jongh endorsed him. Brailsford is more at fault for the appointment.

When Big Sam left Bolton he came to Newcastle without Freeman and for 7 months we were garbage. He tried to implement the Bolton style without the physical type of player.

Gary Speed was naturally very fit. All the players who played with him said he was the best trainer and often used to do extra work after the squad training had finished.

Doping? Can't rule out the possibility, like all sportsman, but there is absolutely no evidence against Bolton, Freeman, Big Sam or Speed.

Allardyce took some of the main Bolton medical staff with him. I think Freddy Shepherd was a small bit worried about the cost of it all as it was a huge staff he wanted at Newcastle.

I still can't forget this one.

"I'm not suited to Bolton or Blackburn, I would be more suited to Inter or Real Madrid," Allardyce said. "It wouldn't be a problem to me to go and manage those clubs because I would win the double or the league every time. Give me Manchester United or Chelsea and I would do the same, it wouldn't be a problem. It's not where I'm suited to, it's just where I've been for most of the time.

"It's not a problem to take me into the higher reaches of the Champions League or Premier League and [it] would make my job a lot easier in winning it."

with all respect, gooner, you really take that version of the story at face value?
history of the sport should tell you that's unwise.

What else do we have on this guy?

That would imply that you actually have something on this guy. What is it you think you have?

So far it looks like Im reading a linkedin profile.

well yeah, it's meager, have to admit.

the important point is what i pointed out to gooner.
Seeing Freeman's linkedin profile, you gotta have some thick blinders to take the walsh/sky version of events at face value. That is the version in which (following Peters) Freeman quizzes Leinders on doping, the latter assures the former he has a clean history, and the former goes on to recommend the latter to brailsford, convinced as he is that the latter indeed has a clean history.
Mkay.
To be sure, it's heartwarming to see guys like you and gooner buy into that.

Freddie Shepherd appointed BFS and them Ashely took over,

Can we stop this Big Sam nonsense, it is Big Fat Sam, I think we could forgive his lack of results at Newcastle had the football been less dire

ANyway why Freeman warrents a thread on him in the clinic is beyond me, it is not like there is any evidence against him, and he could be discussed in the Sky Thread if necessary.

De Jongh vouched for him. Brailsford said Leinders lied out through his teeth. There's definitely a cloud over it. Read again, Brailsford is more at fault for this.

Plus, the guy has been ditched and the success has carried on. I like to know how and that's of more interest to me. I have strong doubts that Leinders was any mastermind here. I think it's a more on the side thing going on.

Or Bit Fat Scam to be more precise, after the allegations about his son and bungs. Bought a villa in Spain with his pay off from Newcastle and named it Casa St. James'

I'm not even a fan of the guy. Any Arsenal fan will tell you that. I have a strong dislike towards him.

Agree on Freeman.

why would Leinders have had to lie?
you actually think that in the interview they insisted on him having a 100% clean history? from what planet must Team Sky have been to seriously believe something like that?

what reasons (other than thick blinders) do you have to take braislford's version of events seriously?
