Come on down: Floyd Landis

That was the hypothesis that a lot of people came up with and I couldn’t defend against it at the time because I couldn’t just say ‘This is when I did the transfusion and this is when the positive test came.’ But then they went back and ran the B samples on other tests and the pattern of the positives they came up with can in no way be related to the blood bags. It just doesn’t make sense. And the complexity of the test made it so that they could convict me without anybody actually looking at what they actually did. That lab…they probably do some good tests but the results they came-up with were absolutely senseless. They really never did identify testosterone. And the dumb part is…I actually took testosterone the year before that - the cream stuff I used the entire race - and I was tested and nothing came up. But then I decided if I am going to carry around drugs, I might as well carry around something that’s in a syringe. Doing testosterone was easier but growth hormone worked better.

It felt better. The effects of these hormones are delayed. It’s not like taking an amphetamine or a drug where you feel something different immediately; you really have to pay attention because the differences are subtle. Some anabolics work faster than others; some cause you to retain water more; for me, the growth hormone didn’t make me feel as stiff and bloated as the testosterone did. And there was no risk (of detection) with the growth hormone at all, apart from just physically having it, so I just decided I would do that. USADA (the United States Anti Doping Agency) have asked me to try and reconcile the tests with what happened, and I don’t want to discredit them or WADA (the World Anti Doping Agency) because I do think that there are some people there trying to do the right thing, but I stand by my argument that if you are going to have this strict liability thing, where people are responsible for everything they’ve got in their system, then you better get it right. I did use testosterone leading-up to the Tour, and I know what the clearance rate is, and I know more now about how the carbon-isotope test works and how long the delta change in the carbon isotope should last and how it should degrade over time and I can’t match it up with a blood transfusion. It just doesn’t make sense to me.

And had the initial idea of an amnesty:

...
I mean what they should say is just ‘Look, everyone is immune – just tell us what the *** is going on?’ That’s what I suggested to USADA and WADA that they just give everyone immunity and just get the facts but they won’t do it.

Interesting...

With the benefit of time Floyd's frustrations with the hearings don't seem so crazy anymore.

Now we know what a rat & snitch Armstrong was with his cosy relationship with the UCI in making sure other didn't succeed. It's not a stretch to believe there was some form of foul play.

Going on memory alone but one of the lab testers during the hearings was shown approved testing sheets that she didn't sign - ie they were doctored. After a quick recess and clearing the tears from her eyes she then changed her staments that she did sign the sheet.

When I find the time I'll dig out the dialogue.

Yes he was doping but not in the way he was caught.

Give Bruyneel amnesty? Only in the filthy incestuous world of pro cycling would that be a good idea.

I find it ironic that Floyd said a bunch of stuff and the take away for HeinPat was to sue him for slander.

Fast forward a cuople of years, and UCI Pat is now suggesting exactly the same word Floyd suggested: amnesty.

Personally I prefer truth & reconciliation, SAfrica style, where the current governing (team management & UCI) are replaced. UCI at a bare minimum.

What you propose would be a mere cosmetic reshuffling. The voting federations would just vote in replacement stooges. Nothing is going to change unless something external starts applying pressure to the UCI.

Not so sure. Hein groomed McQuaid. Who is Hein or McQuaid grooming now?

Is there news I missed?

EDIT: never mind!!! (duh)

What I meant that whilst the confessions are nice but there was one person who started the run on truth. Without his confession there never would have been an investigation of this size.

All of those riders are no different from Floyd, Tyler or anyone. They all lied most of the careers for the obvious reasons but some more than others paid a heavier price.

Dear Floyd,
please go after McQuaid. Take him to court. Same for Armstrong. Show them no mercy. They didn't to you.

Fair play to the whistle blower Landis

The 2006 Tour should have its top place left blank. It is ridiculous that no one inherits Armstrong's titles but Pereiro gets Floyd's.
Technically they're different cases because Landis tested positive during the actual race. You can't take away Pereiro's win now, unless his own use of PEDs is proven.

I wish Floyd would write another book, except this time, more like Tyler's book.

Yes, I wish he would. He must have so many details of what went down during those years. It would be an interesting read, I'm sure. I'd also be interested in his view on what happened the last couple of years, basically since he's come clean.
