Kirby: "Soler is Colombian, he does know about mountains and he does know how to descend. Brian?"

Brian Smith: "Well I was just about to say he's not the best of bike handlers."

But later on the day Carlton Kirby redeems himself with commentary on Cunego's super fast descent.

. Very welcoming after suffering through the awful Declan Quigley for the last month. Why oh why wasn't Rob Hatch given the Giro?

When it was announced that DH was not doing the Tour, and before DQ was confirmed, Rob Hatch said on Twitter that he was committed to other events.

Mike Smith ? They cannot be serious. His promotion to snooker was the best thing that ever happened to cycling broadcasting

I was watching him on the Eurosport 'Milk Race' coverage - was a cracking question to one of the female riders which went"you look a little nervous?!" to which her reply was "no I'm alright actually."

Today Eurosport (Asia Pacific) has 25 hour and 15 min coverage of Le Mans. You did read that right. 1 day, 1 hour and 15 minutes. Straight through, nothing else.

Not really surprising as there is no Moto GP, no snooker and no big cycling races today that they can show.

Oh you lucky, lucky people, you have no idea how fortunate you are to have the current brop of commentators.
Back in the day we had David Duffield, oh the pain of it all

There was i glued to the set, anxiously watching as the leaders ground their way up one of the climbs; Duffers was wittering away about what he had had for lunch. It was goats cheese, it was always bloody goats cheese when someone shot out the lead group and launched an attack. Did our commentator duely inform us what was going on, no he went rabbiting on about his lunch

I am gutted Dave Harmon isn't coming back in time for the Tour. I guess his projects are taking longer than first thought. Seems as though he will be back for the Vuelta then.

Suggestion from the British Eurosport twitter feed when I asked if he was back on Saturday was that he is unwell so unable to travel. I think he's missed, although Rob Hatch does a decent job, especially when he's in tandem with somebody else rather than flyying solo.

When you're on air for 2hrs+ you need the personality commentators. Harmon and Kirby are exactly that, the others less so. Even if they are talking a fair old amount of waffle, they're both very easy to listen to and are able to go off on tangents without losing the reason for being there.

The Harmon thing is very odd. He's not been on Twitter for a month now either.

They should get Duffield out of retirement then just to commentate the first 5 hours of every stage.

They should be eyeing the opportunity to snap up Hugh Porter too now that he's been ditched by the BBC. What a combination that would be! Duffers and Porter.

OK, I'm sorry Eurosport but less than an hour in to this years Tour and I'm turning over to ITV. I can't take Kirkby and Smith for the next 3 weeks!

Kirby is awful. I'm going to stick with Phil and Paul, at least they're funny (for the wrong reasons :p).

Yeah it's kelly with Kirby. Did harmon get sacked? Note he said he was freelancing following tour of turkey but back for tour. Though he hardly featured in the Classics. Did he think he'd become a personality or something?
