he doesnt say it "wrong" if he is saying the name as its original German pronounciation, Trek is obviously an American brand so theres a conflict here already as part of their new name has got to be anglicised if we are doing this properly.

but Id struggle to recall any time Ive heard an English speaker in the UK say Im just off to Leeedl, or lets got to Leeedl instead of Ardi (yes Aldi in German sounds like Ardi or Adi), in English its just Lidl, and thats how all the "little Trek" memes have been born, Leeedl doesnt meme with little in English, as they arent then a homophone of one another if they are pronounced differently.

That is incorrect. Aldi is pronounced with an L and definitly not an R and not without the L. It's pronounced Al-dee more or less.

But I get your argument, most German speakers don't give a flying *** if you mispronounce a brand name, it might be found funny but that's about all I think.

This is why I think it is quite hilarious on top of that, that Voigt complained about it on German ES, especially because his English pronounciation is not just wrong, it is diliberatly so in many cases.

On the other hand, against your argument that they should "only" focus on the race and not on names I'd say: they are being paid to comment on this, they can be expected to know how to at least somewhat properly pronounce the names of the riders.

...so why are they doing this ? because theyre commentating for an English speaking audience, where it sounds very odd to say Leeedl, but Hatch has this well known thing where he insists on the correct pronounciation of all things European at least, we strangely never seem to hear much about Team albahrayn, or Yeesraehl premier tech.

and its just crazy because it now permeates all of the commentary team, youve got Jose Been spending most of the time she commentates focussing solely on correct pronounciation of different languages whilst speaking all the English bits in accented Dutch and then clearly undermining the whole point of doing it, just like Jens in his Germanic/Anglo accent, and now even Kirby is getting involved with it (of all of them I thought he'd just call it Lidl), like its some contest of who has the better degree in modern languages...
hmmm... almost as if there's a 'pro-european/anti-english' dynamic at work.

Thank you for your response/help.

Yes I am watching on my PC, but I hadn't done anything differently than I have before. I have now explored the symbols and found that for some unknown reason it was set to 'Ambient sound'. Commentary now restored.

Hatch is just a level above Kirby. When I listen to Kirby, I constantly get the impression he doesn’t even understand what’s going on. He completely relies on yelling to create the atmosphere while the content remains completely irrelevant. “Here they approach as they have so many times in the past - for Glory, for their Country…” bla, bla, bla… such a generic nonsense. Hatch actually passes some relevant information while yelling and his only fault seems to be he makes some native English speakers insecure by pronouncing foreign names correctly😉

Okay, I know this isn't quite (ES) commentary, but this seemed like the thread best suited to the question.

Is the reason the radio broadcast is slightly delayed really just because "Oh, noes. Would be terrible if a DS was caught using the F-word!"? Or if a DS was caught telling a rider to "be a little *** for 12 Ks".
Or is there a more practical reason, such as making sure other DSes can't spy on teams?

They're only allowed to broadcast specific things, so they obvisouly need to review it beforehand.

Yeah, I can understand if the teams don't want everything to be broadcast. However, if the "only allowed to broadcast specific things" is just about avoiding the occasional swear word, then that's stupid.
I assume swear words are a part of it, too, but the teams definitely wouldn't have agreed to it, expecially not for just 5000 Euros, if it could give their opponents some very useful intel.

I listened to Armstrong podcast (What can I say - guilty pleasure, I guess) where they (Armstrong, Bruyneel and Hincapie) were talking about intelligence and even counter intelligence via radio transmission during their days. These guys would actually stage the entire radio conversation because they were sure Team Telekom were eavesdropping. Not only that - they (US Postal) would eavesdrop themselves and could see how the false info in their staged conversation would reflect in Telekom’s radio… I’m sure that’s not possible in the era of encrypted comms but current radio transmissions could possibly (tried to) be used as counter intelligence tool.
