...back in the Eurosport days it was common practice for them to do the voice over on highlight reels as it aired live, so they were never pre-recorded packages, the pictures were put together obviously in advance, but the first airing of the highlights was essentially commentated "as live". which did of course throw up the odd mistake.
But when there is no time pressure element to do so, the only reason for not having a prepared script and opportunity for edited voice over with re-takes where necessary is to produce it as quickly and cheaply as possible. ie to have minimal respect for viewers.

Ive not seen it yet, so dont know who the commentator was, but back in the Eurosport days it was common practice for them to do the voice over on highlight reels as it aired live, so they were never pre-recorded packages, the pictures were put together obviously in advance, but the first airing of the highlights was essentially commentated "as live". which did of course throw up the odd mistake.

I thought highlights just used the original commentating, the one that was being done as the race was airing...

Well Eurosport didn't have alot of budget back then for such stuff which is just essentially filler for the schedule when there's nothing live to show

I can't say ive watched any of them yet this year to judge if that practice has continued for WBD, but I know Carlton was still doing it for the daily Dakar highlights at the beginning of the year.

Depends on the highlights package source and who was commentating, like when Quigley & Dr Hutchinson were doing stages for a race, that was pre packed as youd expect.

Lots of the women's racing "highlights"are just a full replay of the last 20mins anyway as no one could ever find a gap to edit Marty together seamlessly 🤣

But when it was just a highlights package of edited video from multiple races or a stage with multiple commentators, they'd often just get one person to voice over it to provide continuity, and the preference was to do that voice over live for the first broadcast, record it and then that would become the master theyd replay.

But I dont really know if that practice has continued with WBD as they put more effort into the TV presentation side i feel.

Anyone found an alternative method to forking out the full amount yet? Going to look around and see if there are any viable VPN-use alternatives, but I have an EE contract and there is an option to add-on Discovery+ for £20, not good not terrible.

I cancelled my Discovery+ sub in September after my half price deal ran out, and tried the VPN option. It was fine to be honest - I managed to watch everything I wanted. Rest of the Vuelta on SBS (Australia), Canadian races on Youtube and Italian Classics on RAI. It was a bit of a faff though, and I will be honest that I'm considering re-subscribing to Discovery March to October.
