well im surprised the gap is so good but i can see why high budget manufacterers such as trek specialised cannondale and giant would be able to produce superior kit

would it not be possible to simply use a different brand and paint it black, i mean contador himself was awesome in tts last year so surely if the new bike really is an issue he can have last years painted and fit a set of Zipps to it

Contador has a great bike. The problem yesterday wasn't the bike, it was his legs.

Tour contenders have traditionally had bad days after withdrawing blood during the Dauphine. If Contador loses time again today that's a strong possibility. Means he's just getting ready for the Tour. Even though he's still a little impulsive he's matured into a rider who knows how to take care of his business.
Clinic Stuff.

Correct. But it has to be worse than what he did in the TT IMHO.

I remember Tyler, Landis and other riders having awful performances in this race and then went on to perform well in the Tour.

Well, traditionally TdF contenders used the Dauphiné (and the Tour de Suisse) as the final serious test, it's not only that Armstrong won it, Indurain did it several times too, often beating the same folks who'd be around in July. But maybe riders have followed different, huh, "training schedules" these past few years.

Gak! Since July is approaching people are treating WonderLance posts seriously because they're suddenly less distinguishable from other, more serious trolling.

And whoever said it was disrespectful to the race organisers to say they're using it as training for the Tour, two things:
1) riders have ALWAYS used the Dauphiné as training for the Tour; they're happy to have top riders come in and not give 100% cos it keeps things less than predictable and means that they have some money names to bring fans in, and
2) this year the people who organise the Dauphiné are the same people as those who organise the Tour, so they'll be pleased to hear the other people praising their race.

I agree with him because it is not worth giving bait to a troll like him. He is on here to cause reactions.

Common myth of cult cycling fans.

The Giro is more unpredictable and has more mountain stages but the competition is not as tough and there is less intensity overall than the tour.

Oh good grief!

where do they come from?

have you ever ridden up a 20% hill? let alone raced up one...

The field is stronger at the Tour granted, but until the tour includes many mountains as hard as the Giro you cannot compare the avg speeds. If you know the Zoncolan is coming then yes you will race the stages before at a less intense 38 kph rather than 40 - but that is because the Zoncolan is insane. The Tourmalet, or even Ventoux are nothing like it.

EDIT; its that time of year isnt it? I will go and hide under a bridge - at least there will be some space there

Speaking of the TT and bikes, I saw this interesting bit posted by an Estonian guy on another forum

True or not, I don't know, but it is strange that such a good time triallist as Taaramae has been so average in the TT since turning pro.

Taaramae has admitted that TT is his weakest link. Partly it is because he has not made almost no specialised TT training for 2 years. He admitted hesitance how do to TT training and how to fit it into his training program and coaches from Cofidis have not been able to advise him. And true, he does not like this TT bije, it is heavy, uncomfortable and he have not been able to find right position. The fact that he has never used wind tunnel, does not help.
But he uis not only, nobody from Cofidis riders like their new TT bike.

It's not as simple as that. Some riders can do both the tempo climbs of the Tour and the steep climbs of the Giro, some can't. Some riders can deal with both the intensity of the Tour and the nervousness of the Giro, some can't.
