That reminded me of the insults the French guy on the castle wall used in Monty Python & the Holy Grail:) Thanks for a laugh. And welcome to the ignore list, not for what you said, or because you don't have the right to say it, but because I have a right not to hear anything you have to say.

French Knight: I unclog my nose in your direction, sons of a window dresser. So, you think you could outclever us french folks with your silly, knees-bent, running-about, advancing behavior? I wave my private parts at your aunties, you cheesy-leather, second-hand, electric donkey bottom biters.

King Arthur: In the name of the Lord, open this door!

French Knight: No chance english bed-wetting types. I burst my pimples at you and call your door-opening request a silly thing; you tiny brained wipers of other peoples' bottoms.

Found it!
I don't wanna talk to you no more, you empty headed animal food trough wiper! I fart in your general direction! Your mother was a hamster and your father smelt of elderberries!

Freedom of speech and thought allow me to state, politely, that I think AC is a jerk and I hope he has sub-standard results in 2010.

Yep. How dare he work against Armstrong in the '09 Tour like that. Attacking against team orders. No gratitude, that boy.. And he stays with his family in his home town instead of moving into a huge closed-off estate. And he can't even speak English. Jerk.

Back on topic. I was looking at the list of UCI points for races earlier. Contador dropped the Volta a Catalunya amd Pais Vasco, each worth 100 points plus 6 for a stage win. He now has Criterium International, zero points, and Castilla y Leon, no points. A win at Liege Bastogne Liege is worth 100, and Fleche Wallone 80. But there are a number of guys better suited to those races.

Volta Ao Algarve had no points. Alberto won Paris-Nice. Still to come are the Dauphine Libere and Tour de France. I've got a feeling that at the start of August, Alberto will look at the UCI leader board and see that if he wants to repeat as Rider Of The Year, he'll still have some racing to do.

I hope so, but my concerns then become the Team Time Trial, and like he said, what the team has left after the Tour de France. I wouldn't expect Vino to do a third grand tour (if he's allowed to ride the TdF). If they need all there strongest riders for the Tour, wouldn't they need pretty much the identical squad a month later?

Still, the whole season is there to play out and I'm sure surprises and twists.

I think Contador's would be domestiques in the TDF(possibly the majority are Spaniards)would love to race at their own GT.This might inspire/motivate him to race at the Vuelta.Barring any injuries to him and to his domestiques I dont see any reason why they should do otherwise. You're probably right that they need the same squad as strong as their squad at the tour.

Vino would be a very significant domestique should he be allowed to race at the TDF.I know he loves his team very much (and has much respect/support to Contador) thats why he could try to do a third GT.

Hibbles was being sarcastic. Doesn't always translate well on the internets or in writing.

At the end of the day, I'm not sure if that will figure in his calculus. His first goal is the Tour. If he wins that, everything else is gravy.

Contador fans who haven't seen the link from Criterium International thread might want to read this Versus article and leave a comment for Bob Roll.

http://www.versus.com/blogs/bobkes-bike-beat/a-tale-of-two-champions/[/QUOTE]

BRoll needs to get his act together- when he speaks "for himself" his opinion is clear and makes sense-but when the LA cheque arrives, he goes against any form of common sense and rationale at all- that article is just a load of $hit, specially when the majority of the cycling community is already aware of what took place last year.

Wow, Bobke sure loves the word "scintillating". I wonder if he used all of his hand gestures when proof-reading?

I'm a little bit surprised that Contador has dramatically altered his race program to race specifically against Lance, although Lance is taking a much different trajectory to arrive at his best form later in the season during July. For conspiracy theorists, Alberto has changed his program to show the world that he is the best. It may be Contador's hubris that is his undoing.

What's so surprising, Bobke? If it's good for Lance, why is somehow bad for Contador?

Contador said he was ahead of schedule. His race results support that notion. If Contador showed up at Argus or in Hawaii, well, then I'd be surprised and concerned. For me, it think of it as him cooling his jets, and it doesn't hurt to get a good look at Armstrong in the process.

Contador press release

Alberto Contador has offered this afternoon a press conference prior to the Criterium International and having recognized the course of Sunday's time trial, after rising yesterday the L'Ospedale pass, where ends tomorrow's stage. Contador has said he is running on the Criterium “to improve my form and compete for the race”.

What have you done since your arrival in Corsica?

Yesterday when I arrived just went to see the climb of the Ospedale. It was amazing, because at first it was a very good weather, but in the top there was much fog, rain and cold. This morning I went to see Sunday’s time trial.

Have you come to the Criterium with the intention to send a message to Lance Armstrong?

No, I wanted to send not message at all. I came here because I think it's the best for my preparation.

When you changed your schedule was due to fatigue after Paris-Nice or because you thought you were going to be in three races with Armstrong?

I changed the schedule by many factors, first of all because my preparation for the Tour is now unbeatable, I have good results and should not be punished so much. Paris-Nice was hard and Catalonia were 7 days on a course not very suitable to my characteristics. The Criterium, however, are only 2 days and on a good course for me. Then I decided to go to Castilla y Leon because it is closer to the classics and I’ll go there well trained, but I go there mainly to take experience.

In the Tour you were alone in your press conferences, but here you are with your manager. What has changed?

Many things. That Yvon is here means his support and this of the whole team. All riders work with the same goal of being well in July, but also thinking of previous races. This is a symptom of the motivation that we all have.

You say you want to go to take experience on the classics, but you have already won the big three. Does that mean you have the ambition to add one of these races to your palmares, your goal is not only the Tour?

Yes, in the future I'd like to win a classic, but today there are more skilled riders than me and also is a time of the year not very good for me because it's allergy season. But it is certainly a big motivation for the future to try and win a classic.

Are you coming to the Criterium with intention of winning, what do you thought about the L'Ospedale climb?

I come with the intention of improving my form and dispute the race, but there are very strong opponents and very important riders that are just as interested as me in the victory. About the course, I've seen this morning the time trial and I had a good impression. The climb, however, is not very hard, but we will arrive after a tough stage and there will be not to much power.

Can you name your biggest rivals from 1 to 5?

No, there are many riders and very strong. I could not say them all because I don’t know the start list, and also because I don’t like to say names because I can forget some. In any case there is one very strong, Cadel Evans.

How much advantage would you like to have before the the time trial, a lot, a little,...?

If is just to ask, a lot, of course, but the differences will be small tomorrow, although any advantage will mark the race a lot.

How is your relationship with Vinokourov and what it means to be here on the same team?

Vino is a very important rider and ride with him here also motivates me. He is very important and also to compete together. Of course, my relationship with him is excellent.

You mention Evans among the favorites but not Arsmtrong. Is it just another rider here, he do not worries you?

I mentioned Evans because he is very strong right now after doing a great Tirreno. There are other very strong riders, but in the case of Lance I think now there are others above his level.

Are you not worried being on the best form before the Tour?

No, at the Tour I will arrive far better than I am now.

(Question for Yvon Sanquer)

What are the most dangerous rivals and which differences may be in L'Ospedale?

I agree with Alberto about Evans is one of the strongest because it comes from doing a great Tirreno and is a good race for him. About the differences tomorrow morning is hard to quantify, but if the race is fast, there will be good differences. Moreover, the time trial is good for Alberto and there he can also play his cards.

Some have said that you can win the race with one leg, how do you respond to that?

No, I do not agree at all. That is to put a little more pressure on me and less to rivals. There are very strong opponents and win is always very difficult and the result of training and sacrifice. There are a large group of favorites that can win the race.

What is your motivation to win races now?

I like it right where I compete. When I train and sacrifice myself is thinking to do a race Like you have to do it and every time I compete I like being at a high level. There are times you can win, like this year, and others not, but I always like to reach a high level and be in the fight. To train for going to a race without a good level not motivates me.

Does the Criterium International will be a game or a task for you?

It's a very demanding competition and will be good to keep my rhythm and my motivation. It is not a game, because every time I'm on the bike, I’m concentrate only on what I do.

Since most Contador stories never make it into English I thought I'd share a few snippets from the past couple of days. You might have seen that he attended a presentation of an electric mountain bike. While there, one journo did an interview asking him only questions about Spanish soccer, but a few other questions were answered as well. Here's one quote via Google Translate:

The Tour is going to change quite a bit this year, because the objective of team is that you are in the best possible in general. This year as we will have to tighten the race from the beginning, "said Alberto Contador.

http://www.eltiempo.com/deportes/ci...-desde-el-comienzo-alberto-contador_7555252-1

A lot of people are discussing what strategies other riders and teams can use against him. We should probably remember that Contador and Martinelli are putting a lot of thought into Astana's strategy.

He also mentioned that he hasn't ruled out the Vuelta a Espana. If one of our Spanish-speaking friends sees this, would you please interpret this?

"La etapa de la Bola del Mundo me atrae. Vamos a ver cómo se
puede compaginar porque siempre es una cita especial la Vuelta.

La Bola del Mundo es un terreno muy bonito en el que estoy harto de entrenar, pero mi participación dependerá del nivel físico que tenga en esos momentos", finalizó Alberto Contador.

It seems from Google to mean that he's intrigued by the stage with Bola del Mundo, a very nice spot where he's sick of training.

If you're a fan, and are curious about where he trains on a regular basis, Cycle Sport did a ride along last year, with Jesus Hernandez doing all the talking. You can read it for free at Zinio. Click this link, then the blue box that says "inside". Then move the slider at the bottom to page 104. For each issue of a magazine, you can enlarge double pages three times. You can also print. Clearing cookies will let you zoom three more times, and you can also read Cycling Weekly and some other publications.

Thanks for posting those articles/quotes. :)

You're welcome. It's actually really easy to keep up with news stories about him, because there aren't many. His name pops up in stories about LA, or in mentions of races he's not in, but he spends way more time training than he does talking to media or whatever. On twitter today, he said that he, Jesus and Oscar did 120 kilometers in seven hours, with five named climbs. Add in breaks, an hour commute each way, and he's put in a pretty good day

We don't hear much about his work with charities and stuff, but he and Specialized are raising money for the Emergency Fund for Doctors Without Borders. His friends and his brother Fran are also raising funds by doing a bike event that sounds pretty cool.

For the second consecutive year, this team, composed of friends Alberto and also part of Fran Contador, will take part in one of the most demanding test of the international MTB calendar. On this occasion the team will have 14 riders from Madrid, Andalusia and Catalonia, who will fight further by getting fans to buy kilometer run and assist with activities of Doctors Without Borders.

The money will go entirely to MSF's emergency fund, a system that allows MSF to respond in record time in urgent cases of natural disasters, famines, epidemics and population displacements.

The Titan Desert 2010 will be held from 3 to 7 May in the territory of Morocco, for a distance that the organization of the race did not reveal until the last minute because one of the keys of the same is the ability of participants to orient in the desert using GPS.

Google translation for this is more or less correct. He's attracted by the stage and talks of making it compatible (with something he doesn't mention). Just the kind of spoken language that becomes meaningless when someone writes it and you read it again and again.

He likes the terrain and he's definitely sick of training there (as it is any pro who trains in that area when the weather allows climbing to the top) but his participation in the Vuelta will depend on his physical condition at the time.

Thanks a lot! The part of him being sick about training on the same climb so much sounded right. The missing reference was probably in the original article.

Oscar Pereiro has joined Alberto and Jesus in training this week. They've posted pictures, and it was nice to see Oscar enjoying cycling again. Alberto just tweeted this link to a six minute video from their last two days of training. His people take time to make it into music videos, which is nice.

Yeah, I guess it's Jacinto Vidarte that comes up with the videos. I e-mailed him about something once, and he told me about the one at the race track a week before it posted. I think my favorite since they started the you tube account was a training one with a catchy tune about a club-hopping nympho:D

But a lot of the misconceptions about the guy were possible because of a lack of access to info - his website didn't even come up in an English Google search. Now with the regular press releases, the videos and twitter, fans can get to know him better while he avoids the whole celebrity trap. He'll post a photo, seven or eight people will post a comment, and in the "recent viewers" you can see that he, Jesus and Oscar all looked to see what people said.

I've read tons since last summer, and he seems like an intelligent professional that enjoys what he does and says what he means.
