He almost beat Evans in that early stage of this year's Tour and Evans has one of the better sprints of the gc contenders, below Valverde but comparable to Samu. Of course that wasn't necessarily from a group. It was after he attacked the group, where Evans responded and he sort of baited Evans into leading out their sprint and he almost came around for the win.

Then if he races hard in Lombardy and takes some 'GC men' with him. He might even win.

That argument has been floating around in my head for awhile now--especially if the rider has to forfeit salary, winnings, etc as part of the suspension. If UCI wants to make the suspension longer then by all means propose it and pass it, but kicking a rider again after he's completed his suspension is a bit over the top.

You do have a point, but if I remember correctly that rule was established in ~2007 so that the people banned cause of Operacion Puerto wouldnt come back and influence the World Tour instantly. This was done cause everyone agreed not to sign any riders in Puerto but then Liquigas signed Basso and this rule was established.

I don't think that is right--but I haven't followed it closely enough to state that with certainty. I'm talking with respect to the points earned so a team qualifies for WT. AC will receive his world tour points, but however they determine points for WT status for teams/licensing, he won't. It only serves to depress their earnings as far as I can tell.

Well because of the banned riders not earning WT points, it is a 'deterrent' for teams trying to hire returning 'dopers/cheats/etc.' because they won't be earning them World Tour points.

I'm not 100% sure on the matter myself, I'm sure I've read this somewhere - I'll look it up this morning .

Vuelta takes place in July now. Tour is in August/September. Don't know why all the other big GC guns are going to the Vuelta though. Guess they're afraid of Contador.
