Actually that would have been a bit more surprising.
Probably true, but I mentioned her since she won the last completed WC downhill (Tarvisio) prior to the Olympics, at a time when Brigone wasn’t even back to competing. Definitely a hit or miss skier for results though.

Ok, but you wrote Delgado, and he certainly wouldn‘t have won as an old retired male cyclist.

I still would say pretty surprising that it was Brigone, rather than Goggia or Delgado, who captured Italian gold in the Super G. Aside from the fact that she’s primarily a GS specialist, she only returned from injury to racing two weeks ago, when she finished 18th in the Super G. She had a brilliant season last year, but I thought it would be unknown what she could manage just getting back into competition like she has. Good for her. But feel sorry for Goggia.
For what it's worth, Goggia seemed very happy for Frederica at the podium ceremony. Sophia was not on line from the start in that SG along with several others. The light went flat and almost everyone was hitting dips that changed their line. Breezy's crash looked really bad and she seemed unfazed. It's a tough discipline when you get a side-slip view of the course. Ester Ledecka missed all DH runs pursuing the snowboard title. She looked like she was in the rodeo seat after 20 seconds.

Who is that speed skating commentator on Dutch Eurosport with a voice like Roger Livesey? I remember him from the radio commentary of Sven Kramer's Vancouver 10k.

Malinin will be slaughtered now.

I'm actually devastated. This is so fvcking brutal, I hope he recovers from this.
Yes, brutal is a good word for what happened. I too hope that he recovers, but that doesn't necessarily mean 2030 Olympics to me.

Shadorov stepping up BIG!

He skated like he had nothing to lose. In some ways not being one of the favorites, and going in many points down put his brain at ease I guess.

In figure skating and gymnastics you'll frequently see athletes changing their difficult and high scoring elements to easier ones at the split second because they're off or are not feeling it, so I'm wondering why Malinin didn't change his to an easier but clean program after the first misstep. No doubt there was a ton of pressure on him to land ten quads or whatever, but I think he would have been better off with an easier but clean program. He's only 21 though, so while a bit more seasoned it wouldn't surprise me to see him at the next Olympics.

I don't know if you caught Tara and Johnny talking about this and their 'guess' as to what happened based on their experiences?

Disclaimer: I HATE judged events!

The new (to the Olympics) Dual Moguls is good, but would be better if it was just a race, not "judges divide 35 points".
I watched a bit of the moguls - when it comes to future knee replacements moguls skiers are at the top of the list! :tearsofjoy:

I would never claim to be a skier because it was always fourthish on my list of winter activates so on big years I got 10 days, other years five. That being said, I love(d) skiing mash potato piles of snow and brush.

* I grew up in N. Idaho and in the '70s and '80s we didn't see grass or dirt for five months a year so there was time to get in plenty of snow fun, and we had four mountains within an hour (Schweitzer Mountain, Mt. Spokane, 49 Degrees North, and Jack Ass Ski Bowl ( changed to Silverhorn, and then Silver Mountain). Plus more mountains north of the boarder in Canada too. Also great mountain biking on those hills!

Short answer: when you start changing your routine mid skate, everything is off so it might not work out any better than just sticking with your original that has blown up.
Tara and Johnny being former pros I'll have to defer to them, but, how much worse would it have been if Malinin had tinkered with his program a bit? I mean instead of going for an iffy quad why not change it to a triple you know you're safe with? (I'm speaking just in general.) It's easy for me to say though, I've never figure skated competently, for me it was a huge accomplishment just to skate backwards in a straight line rather than doing donuts. :D

Couldn't agree more. I grant that figure skating, as one of the oldest and most prototypical Olympic event, has to judged since that's the only way to decide it, but I personally don't watch any of the other judged sports that have been added in past several decades. The worst to me is aerials--yes, fun for a lot of folks to watch, but it's just a diving or gymnastics event where they happen to have skis attached. Cyclocross is more deserving as a winter sport since aerials are practiced most of the year on artificial plastic surfaces.
