Nobody celebrates a bronze medal more than a relay team that was unsure of getting a medal. Like the Finns crossing the line today. Love to see it.
You definitely still get credit for skating backwards whether doughnuts or straightTara and Johnny being former pros I'll have to defer to them, but, how much worse would it have been if Malinin had tinkered with his program a bit? I mean instead of going for an iffy quad why not change it to a triple you know you're safe with? (I'm speaking just in general.) It's easy for me to say though, I've never figure skated competently, for me it was a huge accomplishment just to skate backwards in a straight line rather than doing donuts.![]()
I enjoy watching all of the board and ski flying events, but...Couldn't agree more. I grant that figure skating, as one of the oldest and most prototypical Olympic event, has to judged since that's the only way to decide it, but I personally don't watch any of the other judged sports that have been added in past several decades. The worst to me is aerials--yes, fun for a lot of folks to watch, but it's just a diving or gymnastics event where they happen to have skis attached. Cyclocross is more deserving as a winter sport since aerials are practiced most of the year on artificial plastic surfaces.
Just watched the Snowboard Cross Mixed. It's an entertaining event, but not really a suitable mixed format. Only way for men to make a difference is by crashing out - all other gaps they open up are instantly nullified in the slipstream anyway, making it a women-only race.
yeah, can't think of a much better solution now either, but they should at least swap the order every now and then, I guess. It would be an idea to change the order between rounds so the men weren't always on leg 1, but that obviously wouldn't make slipstream any less decisive.

In skeleton now they just seem to sum up consecutive individual runs for the new mixed event, which may be fair (unless the track gets faster/slower), but not any better.
My wife and I discussed the origins of Skeleton. It seems a creation of Swiss or Austrian need: too many pints/shots at the uphill bar with no ride home...It wouldn't be the winter Olympics without seeing some bobsledding - while it's obviously pretty dangerous I think it also looks like it would be kinda fun. As long as you have a competent driver, of course.
I went down with one of the Italian team on a ski holiday once. It was one of the most unpleasant experiences of my life and that wasn't even with a flying start. My neck was wrecked. It wouldn't be the winter Olympics without seeing some bobsledding - while it's obviously pretty dangerous I think it also looks like it would be kinda fun. That was awesome!! Brigone is the queen of alpine skiing this Olympics. And as I mentioned in another post, Stjernesund was overjoyed just get on the podium with her and Hector.Frederica's 2nd Gold. The tribute offered by the two Silver medalists showed great respect and friendly admiration for her comeback. That gesture should be replayed by NBC over and over again on broadcast intros just for penance.
We get more coverage of ice skaters getting make up than of most other sports. How come they don't broadcast the first runs of slalom and gs? Too boring?
And she got to share the hot seat with Sara Hector, both after the 1st and 2nd runHard to not love the moments in the Olympics when an athlete who perhaps wasn't among the favorites ends up so thrilled to get any kind of medal. Today that was Stjernesund in the women's GS, who ended up with silver her best result ever. Was fun to watch her in the hot seat getting more excited as her time continued to hold up. Pure joy. She was so exuberant that greeted Brigone (after her winning run) like she was a teammate and kissed her on the helmet
Brigone reigns supreme on the snow, she may get another podium in the slalom since she's skiing so well. Disappointing day for Rast and Scheib who I thought were the favorites along with Brignone and Hector.
At least her win ( and photo of her opponents lovely gesture at the finish line) got some deserved attention in U.S. media. Unfortunately is probably behind a paywall: https://www.washingtonpost.com/spor...ederica-brignone-olympics-skiing-gold-medals/Frederica's 2nd Gold. Yeah, they ditched their entire sports department staffAnd the author was laid off on February 4
That's how it works in luge, which makes it a good relay to watch. They have however changed it from the individual skeleton events so that the timing begins from the start of the run rather than from a certain point afterwards, which means a fast reaction can make a difference as it has just now done in a negative fashion for the Italian duo. It would obviously be cooler if the male runner was allowed to start immediately after his female partner has crossed the line, but that is probably hard to pull off.
