The second option and its not even close.

1 of each monument is the greatest thing anyone can ever possibly achieve in cycling.

Nothing else comes close unless you start increasing the quantity drastically (eg if you say 15 gt's or 10 straight TDF's).

Seriously, anyone who wins 5 monuments, and they are one of each, will go down as the greatest cyclist of 10 generations.

All Gerrans has to do now is win Lombardia and then dedicate the rest of his career to the cobbles:D

Seriously, is it likely we'll ever see a rider win all 5 again? Kelly was probably the last rider capable of it (4 wins and 3 podiums on the 5th) but that was in the closing days on the non-specialist era. Also he was one of the all time greats. Is it even possible in this day and age?

I would call on the forumites across the countries to stick tacks in all his tires to ensure it could not happen. ;)

E3 >> Dauphine
Gent-Wevelgem >> Dauphine

I'd even say things like:
San Sebastian > Dauphiné

1 Tour
2 Giro
3 Roubaix
4 WCRR
5 Vuelta
6 to 8 RVV - MSR - LBL tied
9 GDL
10 FBD Milk Rás
...
Long gap
...

11-30 All the other WT stages, taking out the Vattenfall and Beijing muck and adding in Paris Tours, Omloop, Strade B, etc. Exact ranking depends on your nationality, skills, etc.

What poll will be next, Omloop vs Grand Tour?
Why is that even a question?

Giro vs. Tour would be a good poll to have. Their pretty comparable in most respects.

And it would expose the July only fans.:p

Playing devils advocate here.
A win in Dauohiné would perhaps be preferable if i was a young rider fighting for a chance to lead a team in a GT. These days Dauphine is perhaps the hardest week long to win, you need to climb hard and TT even harder. A guy like Brajko won some chances to lead a big team in a GT with the Dauphiné win.

But i still voted monument because it was what i'd rather have on my Palmares when i retire( from my imaginary yet apparently very successful career).

Who knows what Merckx and De Vlaeminck could have achieved in the classics if they didn't have to race each other

Be more interesting to see what they could achieve today with teams riding as they do and increased specialization.

Let's say anyone who wins all 5 monuments twice. ;)

I myself do rate Hinault's palmarès over de Vlaeminck's and van Looy's for example.

Also has any of the Lombardi hates ever looked up who won that race?

Yes, but I am talking today. In the 1980's and before it was easier to compete in all monuments.

Today, there aren't many people who can win 2 different monuments. Active riders its only Canc Boonen Gerrans and Gilbert (right?) Increase it to 3 and its only Canc and he hasn't been close in the other 2.

the difficulty increases exponentially with every monument you add. Look at it like this

600 active riders (give or take) have ridden a monument.
15 or so have won one.
Only 4 have won 2.
1 has won 3.
0 have won 4.

Now imagine 5?

It requires not only someone who can win both Paris Roubaix and Lombardia, but also 1 other cobbled monument, 1 other hilly monument and a sprint monument.

Insane.

though if MSR becomes a longer Fleche, it won't be as difficult.

As long as you don't start listening to the chorus of assertions hailing the last stage of the Tour as a 'monument' every July.
