I've never crashed either so I must be better than Nibali as well.
I kind of agree that Nibali is an overrated descender. He is very good, but just not as incredibly good as some people like to think. And it's not about crashing. I saw him being dropped by riders like Jon Izagirre, Pantano and Marek Rutkiewicz on descents.

Nibali won two Grand Tours and a Monument when his rivals crashed out or got dropped on the descent. HIs overall record is more spotty but he has the best highlights for sure.

Tom Dumoulin is probably a better descender and I can't think of too many better.

As for today's stage the smart money would be Valverde, if he can somehow get to the top in the same group as the favorites.

Pauwels also has a chance of taking the stage on the break. Depends on how tactical the racing is behind him. I can't imagine him clawing back more than a minute or two, though. Even staying away would be a great accomplishment.

In the Giro 2016, he drop Ilnur Zakarin and Steven Kruisjick
In the Tour of Lombardy 2015, he drop Thibaut Pinot
In the Giro 2017, he drop Nairo Quintana

Wow :)

Tour de France 2014, Contador crashes out.
His vodoo works well. Anton crashed in 2010 vuelta too (on a descent)

Yo-yoing worked for Dumoulin in the Giro, so it could be this years thing (remember, you read it here first! :))
Dumoulin did not Yo-yo
Oropa? Or was he never distanced there?
It was a bit different with Dumoulin. He was distanced and came back later but he was only distanced when Quintana attacked. Froome often already drops when there is a 20 men peloton in front of him, but just overtakes everyone later on that climb.

How? When? Where?
Sagan and Samu are better imo and I can't see anybody else being better than Nibali.

As for the race concerns, nobody is confident enough so the break will probably take it

I really hope that Eurosport will let me watch the whole final climb instead of showing tennis beyond what was scheduled yet another time.
C'mon you can't expect them to show a preparation race instead of the semi final of a grand slam. Thats like expecting Eurosport to show the quarterfinal of a small tennis tournament instead of a mountain stage of the tour de france.

I would guess Porte's descending isn't bad and should be fine to challenge for GC. He might be lacking a bit on the likes of Froome/Quintana/Valverde/Contador who are actually all above average descenders. Porte is probably just average.

I don't expect, I just hope they are able to follow their TV schedule this time. It also kind of annoys me that they're showing the same discipline on 2 channels simultaneously at the expense of others, even if I'm able to understad the reasons why.

I think there are good reasons to rate Pantano and Jon Izagirre as better descenders as well - stage 20 last year's Tour de France.

em ?

Quintana and froome are no better or worse imo

Valverde is very good alright along with Nibali , & SAMU
Contador has been good but in last few years has crashed too much for my liking

Ccylingnews - Nicolas Roche " The climb [Mont du Chat] is difficult. I believe the race is written in advance: an attack by [Romain] Bardet who goes flat out in the descent to try and make up the time he lost against the clock. We know that he likes technical downhills. He made a great coup at the Dauphiné in Pra Loup two years. I bet on Romain even though Richie [Porte] also goes very well downhill.”
