Been watching road racing for 39 years. Just thought that was the most pathetic win since Bruyneel sucked Indurain's wheel for 22km in '95. Jumbo did not deserve that win. With the talent they have in their team they just sat on the wheels and let Ineos do ALL the work then sprinted the last 1/2 a K. Pathetic. Absolutely pathetic. Loved Van Aert yesterday in the TT - what an athlete but his team's performance today was just a disgrace to cycling. Makes the sport a laughing stock.

Brilliant, I like to think you've been lurking in the shadows for 8 years and this innocuous Dauphine sprint stage of all things was what really tipped you over the edge.

Wait until you see the Aussie team for the World's in Wollongong - The selectors will find a way to include Ewan and Hindley.

It would be pointless having Porte or Hindley on the team on that circuit.

Winning the Dauphiné still brings more UCI points to the team than stage wins. I'm happy WvA won his stage but this comes at a cost (tired legs for everyone who pulled).

Considering it was a perfect leadout; the finish was great for JV. Considering also that they were ridiculed by some for a close loss this should make up for it.
I haven't seen highlights beyond the last key but, if they were able to get a free ride behind Ineos and still close on the breakaway in the last meters it would be a classically well-timed effort. They're sitting 1, 3 on GC and everyone looks fresh. Better than a relentless JV train that derails in the final stages, though.

hmm, i think more Van Linden, Esclassan, Sercu, De Vlaeminck in terms of mass sprints. Saronni and Kelly came later and Maertens only had one good year in 1981 at that point.

however, it was the way he won -- often by several bike lengths.

Yes I meant the era not just that two year period but yes those riders best years were a little later.

funny thing is, i was a total merckx fan then.

hated the likes of maertens and thevenet.

history now makes me appreciate those two riders much more. and merckx is very much diminished in my mind for a variety of reasons.

Thevenet was an interesting story. I remember seeing a good documentary about him many years ago.

The risk exists tbh, i.e. Kruijswijk & co getting dropped with Rog & Jonas left isolated in the Alps. Those two burying themselves for WvA probably isn't the plan either because he's also likely to get dropped.

Yes I think there will be too many fast ascents of Mt Pleasant for Ewan.

Thevenet was an interesting story. I remember seeing a good documentary about him many years ago.

indeed. have you ever seen him interviewed? he is naturally humble and with a terrific self-deprecating sense of humor.

i believe that he also admitted to cortisone abuse and this was back in the 80s and he was hurt by that in the public eye and the cycling community at the time. however, i give him huge kudos.

we need a thevenet thread. tho i justify this discussion because he did win the dauphine in his day... ;-)
