It's the fifth consecutive season where Kruijsvijk has crashed out of a French stage race in the summer
Indeed. And I am not sure it is a major loss to the Tour team, as he has oft crashed there if not before. I feel bad for the guy, he goes down a lot and seems to be especially fracture prone

Why not just let the riders get into the cars and out of the rain if they're not going to race? Surely one can still crash when riding slowly in the rain to the finish line

Did Formolo just crash in the neutralisation?

Crash by 30 riders
Have seen nothing but what the hell is this? Can the Tour guys for once stay on their bike...

I've normally done well racing in more epic and nasty conditions. But I've been in races where the roads are so slick they are like ice (new asphalt, oil, rain). To me it seems just dumb to even ride to the finish, should just call it a day there. What a nightmare

Agreed - but that seems to be the main argument for the neutralisation!
There are very likely only so many that can be dedicated to the race, given the need for regular folk to also have access to emergency care. Generally there is a safety plan about how much carnage can take place before countermeasures are put into place
