Porte what an acceleration. I really don't think that he will just be a helper in the Tour as he seems better suited than Thomas to follow the Slovenian's attacks and he is a better TT rider than Carapaz.

Maybe Movistar should have used Mas to set a hard pace in the gc group so that MAL could attack a bit later, but if they did that people would make fun of them for helping out Lutsenko.
At least they tried something and Mas let Porte do all the work before.

Treating Lutsenko like the real threat would have been stupid. Why would you put Mas on Portes wheel only to back MAL later?

Also MAL waited until the hard part of the climb was over to drop everyone from the yellow jersey group

I agree. And the fact that we got to see Padun mano o mano drop Kuss the way he did really enhances the memories of this absurd performance compared to the Foliforov TT win, where IIRC the Russian was an early starter and merely a name on the screen.
