I find it a bit harsh to say him finding the perfect spot is "a lucky break". Knowing where to sprint is an important part of the art of sprinting.

I agree, I think he is being too modest. He found his lane, timed his kick and was easily the fastest man out there.

JJ Haedo is quite fast, at least fast enough to worry Cavendish, but his problem is his tactical nous (losing a wheel) as well as his inability to actually climb anything above 200 meters.

When the saxo's say they are gunning for a Baden Cooke finish, it's because they expect JJ to be 20 minutes behind.

Yes, can't see how haedo was lucky. Lucky not to be squeezed against the rails, maybe, but he was much faster than anyone there. Just looked to his right and decided he didn't need to get out of the saddle..

Does anyone know the situation of Bennati, though? I didn't notice him in the sprint today, heard that he was boxed in, but still. Two years ago he was beating Cavendish, last year he was injured, but this year he still doesn't seem to be at his old level?

He did quite alright at the beginning of the year: a stage and a second at Oman, a stage and a third at Tirreno (2nd in the points behind Garzelli), fifth in MSR... he shut down a bit after that though.

Tirreno-Adriatico I remember. I watched Milan-San Remo, but honestly had forgotten that he was anywhere near freire..I don't know, he's probably doing alright, but two years ago, I genuinely thought he was the fastest man alive. Still hope he may eventually find the form to regularly challenge cavendish.

Bennati missed the giro through injury
Maybe that is still affecting him now.

Right! I remembered something was up with him, but couldn't quite put my finger on it. Thanks!

And Zapata, I think maybe Cav has warped our perception of what a successful sprinting season really is a bit :)

As far as the stage is concerned apparently they were finishing into a strong headwind hence the leadout riders starting to blow a bit. maybe another rider would of helped though, not sure where Kennaugh was- probably Menchov crashed in front of him..

But Sky need to concentrate on getting Hagen up to speed pretty quickly i think looking at that finish.
