US (yeah there is a lot of age here)
1. Tyler Farrar
2. Chris Horner
3. Levi Leipheimer
4. Tejay van Garderen
5. George Hincapie
6. David Zabriske
7. Lance Armstrong (he is racing next year)
8. Christian Vandevelde
9. Taylor Phinney
10. Mattew Busche???

I'm going throw in a little twist as the thread was for current top 5/10 cyclists, but everyone has been assuming male. So I'm throwing in Kristin Armstrong for the gals. Maybe someone will want to start a new thread for the gals.

Kristin's retired. But Mara Abbott certainly deserves a spot.

If you wiped out Wiggins' 2009 season, you'd all be rating him 2nd after Cav this year.

well no, last year he won three stages of races/races (even if one of them was the beaumont trophy) and one overall.. this year hes won, erm, the prologue of the vuelta and erm.. erm... nothing..

i think rankings should include women as well, this is a cycling forum, not a mens cycling forum.

Brits based on cq ranking is actually
Cav
Millar
Wiggins
Hammond
Downing

I would still put the two girls in in the top 5

why do we always have to bring girls into this discussion? If it is a unisex thread then is should be announced in the title. Do we also want to bring mountain bikers and track cyclists into the equation as well?

Aussies

1. Cadel Evans
2. Richie Porte
3. Mick Rogers
4. Robbie Mcewen
5. Matt lloyd??

I struggled to fill out the top 5. A few standouts with not much else to choose from. I guess that means a lot our aussie boys are playing support roles in their teams.

No matt Goss or Graeme Brown?

Clemson, eh? How's the football team doin' this year?

I'll second this ranking, with three exceptions - all the new guard get a ride. Taylor Phinney gets a DOUBLE emphasis - this kid can go places. And, all the old guard get the boot, Horner included, altho reluctantly.

I might (and I do) like some of those "old guard" guys, but I don't believe 'em anymore. Too bad, so sad.

Winning the prologue of the Giro (as well as being 3rd in the Vuelta a Murcia) is a lot more than most other Brits have done. Certainly more than Tour-winner-in-the-making Geraint Thomas. And if we're going by potential, Wiggins still has a lot more potential than most other Brits, even if his season hasn't been good.

I would disagree, Geraint wore classification jerseys in both Dauphine and the Tour de France. Won the british championship, and finished 2nd on the cobbles stage in France. Ahead of Brad for me.

but anyway, its all personal opinion

No, because its the ROAD section, track and mountain bike has its own section, but since when was this the "Professional Male Road Racing" forum?

Question was, who are the top 5 or 10 riders from your country.. stop being so sexist :p

Mens Road in Australia:

1. Cadel Evans

2. Michael Rogers
3. Heinrich Haussler
4. Richie Porte
5. Matthew Goss
6. Matthew Lloyd
7. Mark Renshaw
8. Robbie McEwen
9. Simon Gerrans
10. Stuart O'Grady

O'Grady 10th even though he has no recent results, but you would still pick him in your GT or Classics lineup. My Tour squad would be the above, with Robbie and probably Goss missing out.

portugal

1- tiago machado ( a lot of potential and amazing rider to watch)
2- rui costa (even tho i hope he turns into a GT top guy i reckon he can prolly just be like luis leon shanches and get a lot of 1 week races and maybe some hilly classics)
3- sergio paulinho (manolo sainz killed his futured and bruynel buried it but he still is a very good rider and a very nice guy that gives all he has for his leader( ex: tour 2009 for conti)
4- manuel machado (hard pick here btw him nelson oliveira and andre cardoso but since he rides on a pro tour team and seems to be developing rather well i can see him getting some second class sprint wins)
5- nelson oliveira/andre cardoso( first has an amazing ITT potential(eighth in this year tour de l'avenir prologue) and some decent montain pontential, maybe a GT kind of rider second has a lot of montain potential prolly could be a very good domestique like he was in this year volta)

anyway since there aren't many portuguese people around, could you guys give a small opinion about them? i am sure you are getting tired of discussing gesink err i mean the amazing dutch riders :p <3

You can't put women in the same ranking unless they did the same races. In which case they wouldn't make the top 5 or 105

I tried to think of a list, but apart from Gesink, Boom, and Mollema, it's really a toss-up. You might as well put Kruijswijk or Tjallingii in there. But it's nice to see that our three strongest riders are 25 or younger.

I pretty much agree. Kruijswijk is pretty promising. Maybe id add koos.

Inspired by the 'Top 10 Cyclists from your country of all time' - thread i wanted to know what do you guys think/consider to be the the current best cyclist from your country?

I guess the answer is always going to depend on how you ask this question. If you mean the best cyclist from a country who are currently riding, or the best cyclists on current form. The latter being how most posters here seem to have answered the question.

If best currently riding.

Robbie (Most wins of any current Aussie rider)
O'Grady (Monument, tour stages, multiple WC and Olympic track medals)
Evans (Semi-classic winner, finish second a lot, won a race last year)
Rodgers (multiple WC)
Haussler/Gerrans (I needed a fifth rider)

If best on current season.

Evans (Giro stage +)
Davis (First tour de Cheeseburger)
Porte (impressive first season)
Llyod (Giro stage, climbers jersey)
Goss (multiple wins)

ouch.. sexism really is rife in the forum this morning.

Of course you can compare.. and on that basis, when asked for the best british rider this season, it is for me without doubt Emma Pooley.

Matt Goss is a rider that should definetly be in the top 5. Maybe he can replace Mcewen. Get rid of lloyd as well. I hope you are joking about Graeme Brown!

I mean, maybe since they ride separate races, you could make separate lists. There are (perhaps sadly) many who only follow male road cycle racing (and I am admittedly one of them, I suppose because it's easy to find and I don't want to allocate more time than I already do to following cycling). So they could make their lists of male cyclists. And if you're interested in female road racing you could make a list for that too. Then you could talk about which one has more impact in their field if you wish. It doesn't seem too difficult to avoid the gender issue.

That said, calling people out for including women is kind of ridiculous in a purely subjective exercise.

Emma Pooley is a very fine cyclist no doubt, but she isn't better than any protour mens cyclist. If u want to just count up the wins why don't u include vets or juniors as well.Maybe Malcolm Elliot is the best British cyclist.Or have u got something against vets?
