Christian Vande Velde. This season, Christian suffered a broken collarbone at the Giro d'Italia, three broken ribs at the Tour du Suisse, and today, suffered two additional broken ribs and multiple contusions. This race will go crazy tomorrow!!

If VDV wasn't such a girly man and up to the standards of the CN forum peloton, he'd be on his bike tomorrow and grit his way through it.

Oh no. He'd be out training TONIGHT on some snowy peak in south America, toughening up for tomorrows cobbles

He finished the stage yesterday, that pretty good with broken ribs. Breathing must have really been hurting him, I don't think it is not 'hard' enough to drop out with those problems, I just feel sorry for him, this was probably VdVs last shots

i have broken ribs and continued training but deep breaths and hard efforts are very painful also getting out of the saddle can hurt bad climbing sucks. on ribs alone i would consider racing still depending how bad they were. i have broken ribs twice the location of the break matters to i broke some in my upper chest that was worse when i broke some lower down on my side add a broken wrist to that and i can see why he is done.

oh he only broke ribs this time i was confused i thought it was worse. one thing to consider is that if ribs are already cracked or broken and you take another blow to those ribs you could get a punctured lung or worse.

my last crash my stem slammed into my chest breaking ribs in the upper chest and my drop bar poked deeply into my abdomen making a contusion of the abdominal wall no pancreas damage luckily as that is what got hit. physically i could ride but racing would have been difficult at best. i feel for these guys they train all year for this so if they drop out you can assume there hurt bad enough.

You get it. Anyone who races seriously gets it.
The GC contenders work their bags off all year for the TDF, and it comes down to a roll of the dice on stages like yesterday and today. Every stage has its dangers, but why make it worse? Sure its thrilling to watch (like stage 3) but there are now several serious GC contenders whose TDF is done for all intents and purposes from what amounts to a crap shoot.
Why not just have the entire peloton go into a casino and roll dice all day and decide the GC for the stage that way?
Its a GT, not a spring classics. Throwing in the pave` sections really makes as much sense as throwing in an HC climb in P-R.
Yeah, its great to watch, but kind of stupid at the same time.
