i have major respect for the results they have achieved...many years ago. what were they eating when they were kicking azz? it's ok to not eat meat.
just don't ask me to eat BBQ squash.please? when i want some meat,
i want some meat. not, everyday maybe, but i like it. it is calorie dense and you have to make adjustments in your daily intake. some folks can't have wheat or milk or peanuts. whatever. more weed.:)

Not so much when it comes to TdF winners.

Hmm, that's an interesting perspective, BroDeal. Right off the top of my head, I can think of one or two omniverous cyclists who have never won the Tour, either. Here are the two I could come up with (can anyone else add to the list?):

Kevyn Ista and Stuart O'Grady.

EDIT: @usedtobefast: Turns out that Pearl is a lacto-ovo-vegetarian. (He eats dairy and eggs--just no meat.)

You got me with O'Grady. It turns out that booze is not the food of champions during a GT. :)

For me the desire to cut meat out of my diet has more to do with the horror that is factory livestock and poultry production. It really makes my stomach turn when I examine were most meat comes from. In addition the energy and water resources that go into producing a pound of meat are a staggering impact on the environment compared to plant production.

I'm not a total vegatarian, but I eat less and less of it and feel no worse for of it.

Beer is vegan guys, and that is part of my problem as a slightly-fat vegetarian (ok ice cream and cheese are part of my personal problem too). Meat is far from required to ride fast, but being a vegetarian by itself won't make you fast either. My grandfather was a cattle rancher, I was around a lot of beef production as a child, made me never want to eat it again.

I can't say it any better than Bro did. This thread ceased to be about the good aspects of veganism once DR descended upon it. This became a pulpit for Reverend Fruitboy to decry the evils of omnivorism. Hey look! A vegan sacrificing himself for the omnivore. The cycle continues...

Please lets not turn this thread into beastiality photos thanks.

I happened to see the man himself today riding near where I live today. I was riding on the opposite side of the road going home from a ride that I did today.

Did you see lots of people riding with 1 inch of seat post and no water bottle plus about 20psi in the back tyre too?

I got home with 210km on the clock. Lots of vitamin D.

Actually, that's not always the case. =(

For example, Newcastle Brown has a fish bladder additive in it, and a lot of other drinks are processed with animal products that aren't listed on the labels.

I just found this website: http://www.barnivore.com/. It documents what animal bits are in what beverages. (The fish bladder thing is listed as "isinglass finings.")

Chips, beer is all good stuff. I reckon i could cope with being a vegetarian with eating cheese and milk or whatever but being a Vegan is going too far, too much hassle trying to avoid things.

I noticed on that earlier food pyramid sweets were OK but some sweets have gelatin as part of the ingredient - which is ground up and boiled cow bones/entrails so go easy on them.

So no more beer or wine for vegans! wine uses isinglass(some sort of animal product similar to gelatin)to make it clear.

Ah excuse me, in case you hadn't noticed "Reverend Fruitboy" started this thread. You are the one who descended on it with what amounts to a total non contribution.
Well done Polly. Of course that was my way of saying that the thread sucked. I'll dumb it down next time. I happen to think that "Reverend Fruitboy" is a great contribution to literary work. Your opinion may differ...

I see you don't restrict your condescension to discussions about diet.

I think it's obvious that most of us think veganism is a great choice for those who want to try it. Good for them. It's the Jim & Tammy Faye routine we can live without. You can't take a thread sideways when the whole thing started out in a free fall.

I saw you going past the Red Rooster on Oxley Drive in Runaway Bay on Sunday at around 9.30 am IIRC. I was lucky when taking off from Brisbane that I was able to get off early so I avoided a lot of the larges masses of people on the road. I had one banana pre-ride, one during the ride, plus one gel, and one banana when I got to Southport. The only thing that was tired was my legs.

In previous years I sat on the start line for ages while they got their act together. This year I deliberately turned up late and everyone had already left. Not much traffic when you do it that way too. Slow trip for me as I'd hit the deck at 40km/h the day before.

We sort of pushed away up the to the front near the start line so we weren't sitting there for 15 minutes. I was in the second group overall on the road, a few other people I was with managed to get into the leading group.
