Let's look at this from a scientific point of view with the following syllogism:

  • Thesis: Neither Pogacar, nor Van der Poel can win this. They have won the previous five monuments. Even Merckx and De Vlaeminck haven't won more than five in a row among the two of them, so it's scientifically impossible. It's like trying to win your sixth Tour. It's challenging the gods.
  • Antithesis: UAE and Alpecin have won the previous eight monuments, so they can't be beaten by the other teams.
  • Synthesis: Somebody else from UAE or Alpecin will win. So I'm putting all my money on Vermeersch: one half on Florian and the other half on Gianni. With this scientific approach you can't go wrong.
Smart, like betting "the field" in a horse race.

I voted for Mass Patterson.

It's unlikely but he was so much better at E3 than he has ever been before, so if that improvement will also be present at De Ronde, I think he could be in with a shot, even though it's a bit hard to envision him following Pog and Mathieu on the worst hellingen.

My brain is not fully invested in this decision but I think he has been seriously good this year and they definitely don't want to get to the finish with him.

So he'll attack on Molenberg?

It'll never not be strange to me that we just expect Pedersen to not hang on the steepest climbs here.

We tend to talk about him like he's 170 pounds when he's in the mid-150s.

Why is my man Alberto Bettiol not an option? Pretty disrespectful towards the former winner of you ask me!
He is an excellent rider, so is Navaez, Carapaz..but if you race from behind, as has been this season you are likely to miss the moves or significant separation!! I would love to see Bettiol race from the front instead of waiting to counter current favorites. With current MVP, Ganna, Pederst, Pogacar form worthy riders react instead of attack.. Not a criticism, I would likely race the same if you witnessed spring results.. And Alberto has a good sprint!!!

Pogačar will apparently embarras himself if he doesn't win by 3 minutes, so I guess anyone who manages to finish inside of that will be the winner.
He doesn't typically say anything like that, usually praises other competitors and talks about quality of field.. But if he did say that multiple minute margin is success.. Ok..Pogacar is not arrogant or over confident in my opinion.

Has he ever been able to hang on?

It's true but I've heard that Primoz races PR this year and restarts ski-jumping career the next season.

The most realistic scenario regarding Rogla in Roubaix is a no risk no glory attack in km zero and the peloton just shrugs and ignores him.

Then 6 hours later for various reasons I won't enter into detail about (no need to spoil the surprise and fun eh), Rog wins.

Whatever happened to Kasper Asgreen? Seriously, very rapid decline from competitor to anonymous.

In most cases, when riders race from behind on the cobbles it's because they don't have the legs.
It sure is the case with Bettiol this year.
