Cummings committed tactical suicide today. I cant see any reason for him attacking like that unless he knew he could rely on some extra watts.
Before his attack the viewers are being shown how Cummings bike is checked with a thermal heat cam and how before the race the UCI have checked for motors with their special device. Its allmost as if the tv director knew what was about to happen.

Cummings bookies favorite for today's stage.

No, I claim that it is unusual to ride a Pyrenees stage with 55mm section wheels.
If you watched the stage you may indeed have noticed that, unsurprisingly, he was one of the very few (maybe the only?) to do so.
It might be related to motor use.
If you have a better explanation I would love to hear it.
