I'm talking about this year, honey. Even this Tour is enough to make my point.

This year, Greipel has failed time and time again to show he's at the level of Cavendish. That's why we have threads like this.

There's a difference between "not at the level of Cavendish" (this applies to all sprinters not named "Mark Cavendish") and some of the statements that have been made about Greipel's level which have often been harsh, disrespectful and/or unfair.

Greipel is a very good sprinter but he has some major flaws. Sometimes they can be worked round, sometimes they wreck his races. But he is up there with the best in terms of speed.

The point is Cav never allowed Greipel to ride big races because Cav said Greipel can only win **** small races

The thing is, people were saying Greipel wasn't a good sprinter at all and that a lot of people were better. Well, they've been proven wrong with his third and first place now :)

How many currently active sprinters can say they won 7 GT stages, won stages in all GTs and won a point clasification in a GT? ;)

Not a lot.

OK OK.. For ****s sake.
Greiple is the best And Cav is slower. .

Roll on Thursday.

It wasn't Cav that didn't allow it; his team wanted their best at the biggest races. You also, like everyone else, took the quote out of context.

Really??? It's odd considering Cav's words and Cav's form....

How many currently active sprinters can say they won 20+ stages in all three GTs, a points classification, a Monument, and a track world championship?

Only Pettachi has arguably a better palmares, but he's way over his prime.

But does this mean a man like Greipel should just be sidelined even when Cav is not fit? I'd say no... but the hobbit obviously says so.

Not a lot.

How many currently active sprinters, or inactive ones for that matter, can say they spit on other riders after causing them to crash?

Not a lot.

Great win for Greipel!

Five - Cavendish, Petacchi, Greipel, Bennati and Hushovd. It's not as unsual as you think.

In addition Denis Menchov has also done it, Boonen and Freire only fail because they've never done the Giro and McEwen never quite won a Vuelta stage (a few 2nds)

5 is actually not much :)

Especially since Bennati isn't on his old form anymore and Petacchi is oooooold.

Menchov is no sprinter. Cause otherwise Contador and Gilbert did it as well.

Gilbert hasn't won a points competition yet unless you count the Tour de l'Avenir as a GT. He might rectify this in 12 days or so though.

In all seriousness is there a sprinter competing in today's peloton that is at the level of Cavendish? No.

HTC/Columbia decided to pacify Cav, all the while knowing that his level of fitness at the time (of Milan-San Remo) was such that he likely would not be a player in the end. Greipel had shown leading up to M-SR that he was in far better form, was the better choice, but they decided to avoid upsetting Cav and in doing so showed Greipel no respect.

Well, in my eyes Menchov didn't either.

We might have to have a look at the end of the season how they compare. For me the pecking order is Cav-Petacchi-Farrar-Greipel, but there may be other names somewhere inbetween by this point.

We never really saw much Greipel vs Cav up to this point, but we have seen some Greipel vs Farrar, and Farrar has looked better. Had a really good year last year.

I think even with his advanced years, Petacchi still edges out everyone in this contest for 2nd best. Greipel has too many limitations, while Petacchi may have slowed a bit but he's crafty enough to still stay near the top. Even Cavendish gives Petacchi the highest respect amongst his competitors due in large part to his ability to use of his experience to his advantage. Freire gets a nod to for the same thing.

freire hasn;t put up any sprint in 2 years and petacchi is rapidly dwindling every year now. petacchi has done one top ten this tour?

I hope not a single team helps HTC out tomorrow. But enough idiotic teams that will do it regardless... Perhaps they should try for a breakaway with everyone in it except the HTC team :p

Like today you mean, the peleton really mugged HTC today with all those attacks one after another from the last climb. Mind you I don't think many people expected Cav to make it into the finale anyway.

isn't karma a bad girl?

he leaved htc because he was p+issed. why was he p+ssed?
-always (almost) excluded from the best races,
-not the main sprinter,
-cav.

still he won lot's of races. his train was the main reason for his wins, unlike cav's wins.

what does he has now?
-always (almost) at the best races,
-main sprinter,
-they don't care who is their sprinter,
-he has to work for the team before sprints,
-no train,
-one or 2 wins instead of 20 of the same level each,
-gilbert.

enjoy your stay greipel!! biggest disappointment of the season because he eliminated the so much wanted cav vs greipel duel.

discuss.

pedro
------------------------------------------------------------

then he has problems and "fights" at every single team.

he could a great rider if he knew how good he is.---northern classics potential and smaller races. that's it. stop finding excuses and problems.

greipel won.

it was an amazing win and he showed\proved that he has the talent needed to contest this sprints and in the right day he CAN win.

when i saw it i smiled. i can't even imagine the amount of frustration that was destroyed and the relief that came after.

great win greipel.

about cav,

he is amazing and the talent that he has deserves more hard work. i hope that this defeat makes him better and stronger.

doing races just for training? if he wasn't that great he would be just another andy shleck. i hate andy shleck. cav, don't make him hate watching you and please do your best.

you aren't doing it..

I think you've been reading a bit too much Super Mario to compare him to Andy.

He's racing his 4th GT in the row, is going to ride a 5th and starts his season in January.

Even today he survived a series of climbs that an awful lot of other sprinters didn't.

He lost 1 stage, more or less won the green jersey in the process, and he'll be ****ed off and ready to fix it tomorrow. I don't think this is a wake up call like you make out - if half of what Mario says is true, he'd have been dropped with Tyler & Goss.
