There is no way he should ride with concussion but trying to breathing with a broken nose while climbing ........... Kloden it is with Levi as MTN Dom minus Jani and Horner

Concussions are tricky. Most that would be diagnosed as a concussion... well there's no way you want someone with that riding.

But he apparently rode the rest of the race with this (slowly). I'd have problems walking for 10 minutes with the concussions I've dealt with. Either he's tough and lucky to not lose his balance... or maybe it wasn't horrible and he can recover over night.

I doubt it though... and he'll be of little use anyway. Take him out and let him try the Vuelta if he can.

Wow, although I first thought he's an *** when I saw the interview where he bashes Contador during the 2009 TdF, I admire him now. He seems to be a nice guy and his post stage interviews are always fun to watch. I wish him thew best, but it seems impossible for him to start tomorrows stage :(

Were he to fall again and suffer another head injury, this could be very serious. They have to pull him from the race. Sucks to see two GT contenders go down in one stage.

Alot can be said about this but chief amongst all else: why the hell did they let him keep riding. A concussion is a serious and complex thing, first sign of it and you have to be taken to a hospital and in anycase take it very easy. I'm Surpised that johan is even considering letting him race.

What kind of crazy tour is this shaping up to be.....

Terrible and disturbing. I hate to see him hurt and his tour hopes dashed like that. I don't see how he can or should continue. Maybe he can recover, find his form again, and ride the Vuelta.

Yes and the real danger might be the next blow to the head. Even if he feels well enough to take the start tomorrow he probably shouldn't.

The race doc may have omitted the trick question - What race is this.

With bonus point for knowing the stage finish town and stage number.

I'm not even trying to be funny, but I wonder how well the doc minded after him and whether there were learning points to be taken from today.

Yeah, the doctor failed pretty hard for letting Horner continue to ride. I hope he's ok. :(

Crashed and broke his nose and got a concussion, then rode the last 25k to the finish and still didn't know where he was? That's Jens Voigt badass, right there.

Seriously though, that's scary stuff. Hate to see that, especially to a guy like Horner that keeps all of us so well informed during the race.

How well does Horner speak French? The doc may not have been able to tell that he was out of it. His team does not have that excuse.

this is actually reminding me of joaquim agostinho

not wanting to scare any1 tho and lets remember that this are other times.

Death

Agostinho was leading the Tour of the Algarve at Quarteira in April 1984 when a dog ran into the race a few hundred metres before the finish.[13] Agostinho hit it and fell to the ground, hitting his head. He remounted and crossed the line accompanied by other riders.[14] He was dazed but seemed otherwise unhurt. He walked to an ambulance, holding his head.[5] He then went to a hotel, where his head was dressed in ice. Two hours later he was taken to hospital in Faro, where an X-ray showed he had broken the parietal bone in his skull. He was taken by ambulance, four hours after his fall, the 400 km to Lisbon, the nearest city that could treat him. He fell into a coma in the ambulance and never emerged.

I was thinking the exact same thing. He was with the race doctor for a long time. I know it can take a while for the symptoms to appear but I am shocked he finished.

Who is the new race doctor? Wasn't Gerard Port fired right before the race?

That was pretty shocking - I hope he is ok.

I know some are asking why he was not pulled but he may have answered the Doc's (and team radio/car) questions.
I was right behind a team mate who landed smack on his head and I was first to him. I started asking him questions - ie what race were we in, who was I -which he answered.
It was only when he asked where his sunglasses were for a second time that I suspected things weren't right.

I got him to wait for the medical personnel to come up to us and she asked the same question 'what race are you in?" (which he answered) and then "and where is the race?" to which he answered "am, ah...." that it became obvious he was la la and he had no idea where we were - it was pretty scary.

Its an international race so i would have thought that a race doctor should be able to speak several major languages, even if only in a broken fashion.

If there is a medical practicioner (race doc of supposedly greatest sporting event on earth) not able to address a patient in English, that'd be a shock to me . I know the French like to do things their way, but really.

We'll have to assume Chris proclaimed he was fine, wanted to race, and was let to. Walking in a straight line is harder that riding. Which TdF cyclist ever gets to pedal himself up to speed? Without having seen a second of the race, I know someone pushed him up to a speed where he could have lost consciousness and still ridden straight for several seconds.

Chris knew he wanted to race, just didn't know which way, or what race it was.
The meaning of "where am I"... I wonder if Chris will ever be able to explain the thoughts he was capable of at the time. Hope at least he'll be able to laugh over this one day.

But you would think that sometime during those last 30 km's they might have thought something was wrong while communicating with him on the radio seeing that he was clueless coming into the finish. I wonder if any of the other riders who finished in his group noticed anything unusual. He's a pretty chatty guy.

Hope to hell he's o.k.

I'm really shocked that Bruyneel let him ride after his description of how Horner was after the crash. Even more shocked that after seeing the state he was in at the end of the race, and having had time to reflect after the crash, that he wasn't insistng that he doesn't start tomorrow.

Broken collar bones, yep. Broken brains, no. :(
