I would prefer that my favourite cyclist be apparently nice as opposed to nasty, though nice in itself can almost be a meaningless commodity. However, when it is mixed with other positive attributes then niceness can be a very attractive aspect to somebody (talking about with people in general), and often an underrated one. If I can try to attempt to relate my interest in cyclists with interests in people, then to be creative is important. To be passionate also. And to do something with a grand style.
My favourite cyclist is Andreas Kloden. He seems like a nice guy, and he can be like poetry on a bike. He has also proven over the years to be a good team mate, so doing things for others and not just for oneself could be another quality that I look for.
My next favourite rider has probably been Alexandre Vinokourov. Now this is a rider with passion and creativity! When will this guy attack? Who knows, but he probably will at some point!
Both of these riders have major ‘clinic’ issues. I’ve tended to look at it in the Lilly Allen sense, of everyone’s at it. It’s probable that my favourite cyclist should probably be someone who is racing in b-grade events, but then again they probably wouldn’t have the style or the creativity.
So I don’t really have particularly clear answers as to why Kloden is my favourite rider, though a leaning towards the non absolute best in sport has been a trait with me.
But the importance of niceness in the liking/loving of humans in general could be an interesting topic for another thread.
