I've posted this one before, but it always seems to be a crowd pleaser.

I am a gun owner and rider, I doubt any one in AU could justify carrying a firearm in public when out for a ride even if it were legal... which it is not.

OPs name is a bit of a giveaway is it not??? he says he does not ride any more.
Could be a Trollll

So I say to "rightwing nut" maybe you are in the wrong forum and should be asking some shooter forum if they use a bike to go hunting??!!

;)

I have heard of guys here taking nunchakus in the gear pack for nightshift commutes.
I would think for dogs etc Mace would do the trick... I usually use my Sidi + cleat...

I don't ride anymore, but that doesn't mean I am any less of a fan of cycling.

I could always make another pro or anti lance thread and get 10 pages of replies. This one is up to 3 so far, so I'm guessing it's not all that bad.

You can also use your bike as a weapon if need be. Case in point: A former local frame builder came to the rescue of a messenger friend getting beat up outside a nightclub, and proceeded to jack one of the perpetrators right in the neck with an exposed big ring.

I had a friend who swore one day he was going to. There was a 50 mile loop outside of town and at one point there was a big downhill followed by a steep uphill (imagine that). Well, at the top of the other side there was a house with a big dog. From the top of the downhill (about half a mile or so from the house) you were in full view of the dog. There was no way to beat him. Mostly he just made things a bit hairy for everyone, but on occasion he would take someone out. D had a Cold .380 that he wanted to use, but never did. I for one wouldn't have minded busing a cap in that old *******, but we never did. I did hit him square between the eyes with a lugi, and that did stun him. I also took a swing with my frame pump one time but missed.

Should have read "Colt .380"....I am not fresh off the turnip truck.

Well, I used to carry a Ruger Super Redhawk Alaskan, but having it in the back pocket of my jersey eventually caused all my jerseys to stretch down to my rear wheel.

Now I just have one of those little bar mounted bells to warn people away.

I would say, unfortunately, this is a very relevant subject, especially for cyclists. Anyone who has trained or put in the miles knows what is happening "out there." You can go weeks, months, even years, but, eventually the odds are you will interact with a certain "creature" that isn't very friendly, is having a very bad day while on meds, got a sunburned neck and you are IN THEIR WAY and preventing them from doing what ever it is they have to do, NOW!. We're not talking the four legged one, here.

Right now we may be cycling for the fun of it and what it does for us on all levels, but soon it may become our primary transportation. Most people, especially Americans, are in total, absolute denial and don't see what is right before their eyes. We are about to experience the perfect economic melt down. When this crash dwarfs the so called "Great Depression," people are not going to be very sweet out there on the road. Maybe it will be to dangerous to ride, but the topic of carrying a weapon, as disturbing as it might seem or some might want us to believe, makes sense.

However, the thought of shooting a pesky dog is what people who can't sprint have to consider. Now, that's sad.

Before someone takes offence, this is not a jab at anyone:

If I lived in a country where I felt I had to carry a gun, I'd move abroad.

If I lived in a country where I knew that the bad guys had guns and the good guys were prevented from having them, I'd move abroad.

Here's the thing most gun control defenders don't realize: that doesn't happen here. It's very rare that someone will be able to obtain a gun, simply because it's forbidden, no matter if they're "the good guys" or "the bad guys".

Anyway, the fact that the countries with liberal gun laws top the list of most violent deaths per population topples your argument. This is due to the fact that when the "good guys" have guns, sooner or later a few of them go ape**** over some random bad event in their lives, and turn into "bad guys".

Anyway, this discussion is pointless, so I'm not having it. I've said my 2 cents in my original post. If you want to argue with yourself, feel free ;)

septics or sceptics? and I am sure I would be more of tool if I had one....:p

Sorry I didn't take any notice of your user-name. How about toolless?

We are all sceptics, but only people from the States can be septics.

I can't believe I am in a disscusion about guns on a cycling forum. We live in a strange world.

A few cyclists I know wouldn't mind carrying a gun when the magpies swoop at the begining of every swummer.

Princess Toolless to you! lol :D

Ahh, bloody magpies, little *******s spend most of their time on the ground, unless you happen to be walking or riding past.
