For all you guys in the US, how many of you guys carry a weapon with you while you ride? Do you feel the need to? Why or Why not?

Are you serious? Why the hell would I carry a gun riding? Is there some rash of crimes against cyclists (beyond the usual getting run into by assholes in cars)?

Don't know how much your bike cost, but in many cases a cyclist can be sitting on a peace of equipment thats worth between 2 and 8k dollars.
When I was 16, I was riding back home from Ft. Lauderdale beech. I was with 2 friends, but they had road bikes while I was on my beach cruiser. We got seperated by about 1/4 a mile going up the bridge that crosses Interstate 95. Next thing I know, two guys on a bike one sitting on the handle bars come up next to me and squeeze my brake lever flipping me over. I stood up and got hit in the face knocking me back in the road. The last thing I saw was one of those guys going around the corner on my bike. Happened on a busy road in broad daylight.

And if you were packing, what would you have done? Shot the guy in the back?

rightwingnutjob, a gun nut too I take it.

Long ago riding in the orange groves in southern California i encountered a big 'ol mean farm dog that could make me sprint like hell.

I went home and got a spray bottle and filled it up with ammonia cleaner. Little Bo Peep i think. Went back an got the dog right between the eyes. It howled off.

From then on it was a good doggy.

Think non lethal dude!

I could always make another pro or anti lance thread and get 10 pages of replies. This one is up to 3 so far, so I'm guessing it's not all that bad.

Carrying heat, out on a training ride and I spot Lance... temptation would be too strong. hehee.

So you would be willing to kill another person for a bicycle?

I'm glad you don't ride. Cycling doesn't need people like you.

This whole thread scares me. Mainly because the attitude is not just limited to one desk bound troll, i suspect there are a lot of people that would think this is ok.

The morality thing is so screwed up. People go berserk because a pro cyclist puts a testosterone patch on his balls to recover during during a really long work week. And he is the anti-christ, but its perfectly debatable to think about killing another human being for a freakin bike!

I think the bottom line is - if you feel the need to carry a gun when you ride, maybe you need to seriously evaluate your life, and where you live!

something we're in complete agreement on.

if cycling has a culture in general i think gun violence is about as repulsive to it as anything i can possibly imagine.

i regret that my initial reaction to this thread as pointed as this.

Making the point that crime against cyclist does exist. I'm sure I wasn't the first and sure I wasn't the last.

living in south africa a few years back there was a story in the local newspapers of two brothers out on a ride who were attacked by a gang of four. one of the riders pulled out a gun and shot two of them while the others fled. believing self defense they were promply arrested for murder when they reported the incident to the police. they eventually they got off but the whole ordeal took about two years to get resolved. personally i would rather let them have the bike than go through that riding in groups will help protect you from that element as well.

You don't even know me.
Isn't it possible that you could be faced with a situation where somebody wants to kill you to take your bike. Certainly people have been killed before for far lesser reasons.

I would say, unfortunately, this is a very relevant subject, especially for cyclists. Anyone who has trained or put in the miles knows what is happening "out there." You can go weeks, months, even years, but, eventually the odds are you will interact with a certain "creature" that isn't very friendly, is having a very bad day while on meds, got a sunburned neck and you are IN THEIR WAY and preventing them from doing what ever it is they have to do, NOW!. We're not talking the four legged one, here.

Right now we may be cycling for the fun of it and what it does for us on all levels, but soon it may become our primary transportation. Most people, especially Americans, are in total, absolute denial and don't see what is right before their eyes. We are about to experience the perfect economic melt down. When this crash dwarfs the so called "Great Depression," people are not going to be very sweet out there on the road. Maybe it will be to dangerous to ride, but the topic of carrying a weapon, as disturbing as it might seem or some might want us to believe, makes sense.

However, the thought of shooting a pesky dog is what people who can't sprint have to consider. Now, that's sad.

lol, just reading this now. Good Post. I think you are correct about our economic situation at the moment. Many of the economists from the Austrian School: Peter Schiff, Marc Faber, Jim Rogers to name a few all believe that this is just the start and things are going to get far worse.

Living under a oppressive regime that doesn't allow any tom, **** and harry to 'pack heat' I unfortunately cannot shoot any driver who ****es me off, which is probably a good thing or that ***** earlier today would be dead - dead I tell you.

But seriously is this thread a joke. If so, pretty funny, if not RWNJ and melvil really need to ride into a oncoming truck.

Magical, right brain thinking is the path of least (immediate) resistance. The undoing(horrific death) of Billions of good souls throughout history.

But dont underestimate the ability of the Elites to keep the masses idle(relatively) with "bread and circuses" for a long time(maybe not of course). It seems the MSM could convince the peasants that a flute of turds is champagne.

But this aint the place for that, lets talk about Lordstrongs '99 tour samples!
I bet he's getting JACKED on "ringers lactate",gene-therapy, Dr. Ferraris recombinant yak semen booster, secret NASA macaque XXXredacted/classifiedXXXXXXXX gonads as we speak! Bigboat, come in, roger, do you read me, roger, over, whats the password, roger vector victor,10-4. Speaking of packing heat though, I bet Contador wants to pack some REAL heat for the tour - too bad all he "packs" is that lame, limp-wristed, bang bang John Wayne tribute for his finishline salute. (no offense my lithping little iberian amigo).

ok, it seems "They" have gotten to me, time for my meds.

A couple of things here...

this thread is pretty funny.

Second, the connotation that someone who wants to protect themselves is somehow crazy blows my mind. I live in rural south eastern USA...myself, my wife and my son have all been attacked by crazy *** pitbulls!! My son the worst. Now, I will not lie to you and say it hasn't crossed my mind to pack heat and just shoot any damn dog that comes at us. I'm really not sorry if any of you don't agree with that...I could actually care less. I have never done it, but it has crossed my mind. I feel terrible for my son who is as scared of dogs as he can possibly be...he is 12 by the way.

Don't tell me to just up and move either...that is a tired and lame reply. I have a nice job here and otherwise love the area. We are not afraid of theft or attack, just dogs.

Lastly, some of the comments from some about shooting someone being really crazy, then saying that they should just get hit by a truck are absolutely crazy. Its not ok to shoot someone, but to plaster them with a truck is fine? Good logic.

Don't judge anyone if you don't know them. It is a really good rule to live by.

I thought it was about taking a can of hot coffee with you on those long cold wintertime rides. Or tea, possibly. Whatever tickles your fancy.

Who in this entire thread said it was okay to hit someone with a truck??

Or are you saying that a gun will stop you from getting hit by a car? How would that happen?

Sorry, I'm just having a really hard time following your logic...
