I don't really get the Thomas De Gendt mention in the article... he was never really a domestique, just a breakaway artist.

Instead, I'd pick Paolo Tiralongo, who got handed the first win of his career by the rider he'd been domestique-ing for in previous years. Nice moment.

yeh, i thought that. When laura asked on twitter for names I was going to say de gendt and then thought to myself that hes not really a domestique.

Also for hayman, as well as the 3rd in Omloop he then won paris bourges at the end of the season. Stannard should be listed for sky as well, absolute monster and got his first pro win this year too.

pfft Pierre Rolland had freedom in the past, heaps of it, he just never managed to fufill his potential.
Tour was one of teh first times I had seen him being a full-pledged domestique (i've seen him work a little in the past, but I'd hardly call him a domestique).

Marcus Burghardt deserved his own section imo. The Bulldozer was brilliant throughout the year.

Anyway most teams have a couple riders who really work thier a$ses off and get unappreciated.

Yeah, there's a difference between biggest aide, and best performance by a non-captain.

But, winning contributes to the team. No doubt. Nieve's win was as or more important to EE than helping Anton for that and following stages, as an example. JVS was a better role-player for the team in a winning situation (obv) then dragging Thor and chasing Cancellara.

You could say its circular, but successfully delivering for yourself will always be more of a contribution than "traditional" work.

When he started out it was Bannesto and Miguel Indurain he was working for.

As it changed to Caisse Depagne and then Movistar, he continued working for the leaders of the team.

Over the years he won a stage in the Tour and two in the Vuelta, Did the Vuelta 15 times finishing a joint record 14 times, only failing this year due to a crash.

Even last year at the age of 38 he was finishing up there in mountain stages with LLS and Uran in the Vuelta.

Retired 2 weeks ago.

The ultimate domestique. Never noticed but always there.

I think so. He was one of those guys who enjoyed it.
