Doping in other sports?

Social media and prosports are a messy combination although I can see how sponsors interest and athlete's wages can be influenced by "online followers". What wories me is if the One Cycling project gets the green light in some degree, will gambling be "incentivized"? Then, there'll be no difference between horse racing and pro-cycling (not that there's a lot now!)

There has always been gambling on pro-cycling from its earliest incarnation. Gee, they still have the roadside bookmakers at Belgium races. The UCI and teams really should have rules that ban their riders and employees from betting on pro cycling races.

Yeah, the 1904 Tour really set the tone for procycling! :D
The UCI has rules for betting - no one is supposed to engage in it, but how would they know? The anti-motor doping czar Raudenski was heavily involved with online betting/ match fixing previously so the UCI should realize the dangers of pushing online gambling.
The Inner ring blog had an interesting post about ASO & betting back in 2014 - https://inrng.com/2014/06/aso-tour-de-france-uci-sports-betting/
In September 2011, the French gambling company SaJOO and Bwin.France merged. SaJOO was owned by the Amaury Group, which also owns ASO. The merger means that the Amaury Group as of 2012 (according to Bloomberg), owns 28 % of B.E.S. SAS (Bwin’s French subsidiary: Bwin.fr). SaJOO’s managing director at the time, Christophe Blot, tells that the goal with the merger is to build a forth pillar to the Amaury Group after ASO and the two French newspapers ‘Le Parisien’ / ‘Aujourd’hui en France’ and ‘L’Equipe’.

This means that the Amaury Group (and thereby ASO) is directly involved in the gambling industry. In theory, this means that the ASO (via the Amaury Group) can decide the available prices on the Tour de France, which they organize. ASO it not only indirectly involved in betting on the Tour de France due to the French gambling law, they are also directly involved as the Amaury Group owns a large stake of huge bookmaker. In fact, Bwin is the world’s largest publicly traded online gambling firm with a total revenue of €652.4m in 2013.

Handball is the new dirty! Ooo!
Just as Portugal should play their first match in the Handball World Championships, their star player Miguel Martins gets busted.

Steriods maybe?

Team Norway disqualified at the Trondheim World Championships in the Men’s skijumping competition for prepping already chiped suits with an extra layer of material. FIs race director Sandro Pertile doesn’t rule out further consequences.

Scandal evolved after a Polish journalist leaked a video of the Norwegian coach dissecting a chiped suit. Lindvik, Sundling and Forfang were controlled after the competition and they found the extra layer. Lindvik loses Silver.

Team governed fraud (or material doping) is quite serious I would say. Lets see how this evolves.

They should obviously loose all medals from the skijump championship. Lindvik won gold already right?

Pretending that this was an isolated incidient with two(?) athlethes and "the first time we did this" is straight out of the doping bust playbook. Must have heard it 100's of times over the years.

Suprising to see given that Norwegians never cheat... Roglic disapproves!

Yep. Norway never cheats.

Absolute hilarity in Baseball. https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/62...rofar-suspension-performance-enhancing-drugs/

LOS ANGELES — Major League Baseball suspended Atlanta Braves outfielder Jurickson Profar on Monday after he tested positive for the performance-enhancing substance human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG). It’s a fertility drug often taken after steroids, and it’s the same drug that Manny Ramirez was suspended 50 games for using in 2009.

The move is a significant blow to the Braves, who signed Profar, 32, to a three-year, $42 million contract in January, the only free agent they signed to a multiyear contract during the offseason. They immediately penciled him in as their everyday left fielder, and he hit leadoff in their first four games while star right fielder Ronald Acuña Jr. continues his rehab from last season’s knee surgery.

Some red flags were raised around baseball, albeit whispers rather than public accusations, after Profar had a career-best season for the San Diego Padres in 2024. But the Braves attributed his power and overall offensive gains to adjustments Profar made with his lower body in his batting stance, after working out with Fernando Tatis Jr. and his dad the previous winter.
Tatis also got busted for steroid drug use...

At least MLB has some kind of penalty, though testing is still lax. In NFL it would be a 4-game suspension, then reduced to 2 games.
Baseball commentators actually said that the 80 game suspension is still minor compared to the reward in the contract. He may not get paid for those 80 games but the contract still has years to run and it was based on his prior juiced numbers.
I found their honesty refreshing and, hopefully; eye-openning for any baseball fans that care.....anyone? Anyone?

Good point. And half a season suspension is a world of difference from the 2- or 4-year suspensions in cycling and track and field.

One of the pleasures of rooting for Ichiro all his years here in Seattle is that in addition to his accomplishments I could look at him and his style of play and routines and think, "okay if I had to bet on one guy not doping in MLB it's him." :) And I will be there in August for his Hall of Fame induction celebration weekend.

Tatis and Profar are ex teammates and good friends. Profar on 1st year of new contract, new team. What a start to new..suspended for half the season, half of $15,000,000 down the toilet, chances for post season and performance bonuses, down the toilet. And to make things have a temporary sting.. San Diego Padres swept Braves and Cleveland in home stand.. Currently undefeated and best start in franchise history!!

I lived in the Seattle-Tacoma area for about 20 years and was also an Ichiro fan when he still played. In fact, I got one these silly Ichiro celebriducks way back when, think I might still have it somewhere. lol!

And Kid Griffey should be there, too. The other guy you could bet on being not only natural; He was The Natural.

it's not half the contract. He is only suspended for game days. He still gets paid for the off days.

One thing though, he is suspended from the playoffs this year

Really? He's paid like a day labourer: if you show up and there is work for you, you get paid for that day?

I would have expected all sports team players to be on a salaried contract, and so in case of a doping incident they are either sacked or the club has to accept that they are paying someone who is not useful to them for a time. Or maybe a clause that has a lower pay rate during times of suspension.

I wouldn't have imagined that professional baseball operates according to the rules of the gig economy.

here in US sports, athletes are paid per day not per game. Suspensions are only in effect on game days (except if you are a repeat offender in the NHL, then you are suspended both for game days and non game days.

It's how AROD was paid several million the season he was suspended
