So if general consensus is that Zorzoli is not corrupt, maybe a bit too nice, it has to be concluded UCI is way too dependent on Zorzoli and his "pleasant" ways of working, ie informing / appeasing teams. Either through polite letters, last minute TUE's, etc etc.

In such a critical position for UCI we now need someone who stands a little further away from the pro-teams, their doctors and riders, and puts into place robust processes to deal with them. This is a multi-million dollar endeavor, for sponsors, teams, riders, event organizers as well as UCI reputation.

So time to tighten up, be less dependent on Zorzoli, and invest in a robust code of practice for the UCI medical office. AND time for a change, the relationship is way too cosy for the game the UCI is in to have the same guy in this critical role for over a decade now.

Is it?............

I would say so, but go ahead make your case.

The bigger issue is that we need more robust processes describing interactions between the UCI medical office and teams, and that he needs replacing for the mere fact he has become way too close to the teams.

1 man deciding TUEs for all pro riders, with full access to all medical documents and instrumental in the BP set up.

Seems legit.

Correct. There's no oversight and no "4-eyes" procedure.

Considering EY does their audit, I'm surprised this hasn't come up and been rectified.

That's why WADA mandates a committee.

Yep.

Zorzoli if there is any justice in the world would be toast after this.

I think he’ll be fine. Way too much information going on in that guy’s head to cut him loose!

Having Zorzoli employed at UCI indicates Hein's anti doping model is still active.

Very little change.

It shows just how independent anti-doping has become!

Zorzoli must get some very nice bottles of wines at Christmas time as gifts.

For whatever ill he might have done, Zorzoli is still a hero in the Armstrong saga.

Folks around here tout Flandis.

But, it was Zorzoli that opened the door to Ressiot and gave us the first hard proof.

It also gave us one of our best insights ever into Hein with the awesome D!ck Pound revelation in Torino.

For all that, Zorzoli got a job suspension.

Ok, maybe I'm letting him off lightly here, but it shouldn't come as a shock to any that the peloton is dirty. Zorzoli wasn't the ringleader. He looked more to be just a disgruntled employee, tired of either doing or, more likely, watching Hein's dirty work.

Dave.

Zorzoli did that because Ressiot had approval from Armstrong and Hein. Ressiot pitched his story to them as a glowing reference to his career. It was the only way he got the codes/forms and did the match.

Zorzoli knew what he was doing. Hein didn't.

No Zorzoli, no forms.

The Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) today welcomes the decision of the panel of the American Arbitration Association North American Court of Arbitration for Sport (AAA) to impose a life-ban on Dr. Geert Leinders, of Belgium, for his doping violations committed while he was the Chief Team Doctor for the Rabobank professional cycling team.

The UCI is aware that the reasoned decision includes allegations made against UCI Doctor and Scientific Advisor Dr. Mario Zorzoli. The UCI is now waiting to receive the full file to look closely into these allegations, and whilst this investigation is taking place, Dr Zorzoli will not be involved in any matters relating to anti-doping. No further comment will be made at this stage.

after reading this thread, i just recalled another one - those in possession of more time can search the forum to confirm what i have said then.

the thread title was something like 'what the new prez (coockson) was supposed to do to clean up cycling ?'

i said, 'get rid of all the old guard cronies who serviced the corrupt hiny/phat team starting with the head of their legal team (the dutch name escaped me for now) and the zozo team.

you simply cant built a new house with those guys around if the new house was ever a genuine thought.

zozo was just too deep in the hiny crap, including the texas crap that i object particularly to. zozo will for ever remain a blemish on coockson for not quietly letting the man go.

all that said, jens attack has a point. zozo was a pro at what he was doing. he may even had saved lives. he wrote one my favourite references to-date about the changing blood doping patterns in the peloton.

it was public. it was helpful to both dopers and anti-dopers.

looks like the good doctor has been suspended.. again

I trust Cookson will launch an independent investigation into the matter.

The independent in-house doping commission will look into the issues and release an independent in-house report.

The Golden parachute the UCI gives Zorzoli will have to be pretty substantial, as I assume that the Medical council in Belgium will now have to consider his licence to practice & losing that is a career ender for a Doctor !

We then end up with a very disgruntled former UCI employee, who might be persuaded to come clean, & drop some others in the smelly stuff, rather than taking the whole wrap himself !

As usual it's all about PR. If Cookson was serious about anti doping he would have gotten rid of Zorzoli a long time ago.

The best move for the UCI now is to "investigate" and then wait until everyone has forgotten about this and bring him back. This would probably result in a pretty big media **** storm, but still better than risking Zorzoli talking about everything he knows?
