Organizer Jacques Coussens:
"You know, I kind of feel like the big men are trying to avoid each other. I’m feeling that more and more. And I don’t like it. It’s a shame for cycling. Suppose you get an extra clash between them in the E3 Saxo Classic leading up to the Tour of Flanders – then the whole cycling world is happy. But hey, we shouldn’t make it bigger than it is. For all we know, Van Aert and Pogacar might not race here this year but will again next year. I don’t see a definite problem for us or anything."

It seems like Belgian press struggled a bit today to find enough contenders, resulting in a somewhat random looking star rating

***** van der Poel
**** M. Pedersen, Laporte
*** Stuyven, T. van Dijke, F. Vermeersch
** van Baarle, Grégroire, Mohoric, de Gendt
* Berckmoes, Segaert, Girmay, Pithie, Lund
Looking forward to watching aime de gednt battling it out with Laporte and van der poel on the teigemberg

Well, you also forgot Cancellara in 2010 and 2013 and Terpstra in 2018.

This double is actually extremely common for the past 21 years where it has happened eight times.
So the chance at the double is actually 24%.

For Van Aert there's probably a psychological reason to stay away. If he got dropped by MvdP nine days before the Tour of Flanders, it would be a mental hit. If he won Dwars door Vlaanderen it would give him a mental boost. It could be his first one-day win in a year and a half - and Powless won't be there!

Morgado should be able to be among the best, unless he is sacrificed to help Florian, which I doubt.
Vermeersch and Politt have been named as the leaders in their press communiqué. But I agree that Morgado should be a factor, too.

Have they not watched any races this year, or have they just decided to ignore Hagenes?

Also curious to see how Tarling does. He has been riding like a motorbike all season without any results to show for it yet.

I would think his best chance for a big win is Sunday, but yeah, he should still get a mention. The "someone just rides away for 2nd form a disorganized group" character of these races should normally suit him as well - unless he has burned all matches already until then.

He's not even riding on Sunday, it seems. And I'd say that the more hills, the better for him (at least in the context of cobbled classics). Then he doesn't need to rely as much on brain or unorganized peloton, both of which have been lacking for him so far.

Has there been any talk about van der Poel's crash on Saturday, or whether he's at his best again already?

Van der Poel himself pre-race:
It's a bit of an annoying injury, although that might be overstating it. It is an annoying wound on my hand and nail. It is not very pleasant to ride with, but doable. [Interviewer asks whether he can grip his handlebars properly] That I'm in pain is overstating it. Again: it is mainly unpleasant and quite annoying, because it will take a while [to recover]. There is a hole in the nail and it will take a while to heal, but I can ride with it. That's the main thing.
And on Sanremo:
What happened was nothing that I didn't expect. Everyone knows how exceptionally Tadej Pogacar rides and he has proven so once again.
