When I saw this thread I could only think of David Millar 
2010 - Tour of Flanders: He did a very good race. Post race: "I think I found now my nature, I'm a classics rider".
After Roubaix: "Well maybe the classics are not my kind of thing"
Before Criterium du Dauphine (or whatever it's called these days): "Well if I can keep the climbers in 2min range I have the long TT to win the race overall". First MTF, a very difficult one won by Vogondy, 1min down. Alpe d' Huez, 25min.
So my point is: I wouldn't be too surprised to hear him saying he'll go for it
