this has probably already been discussed so i'm sorry if i'm repeating....
Can Saxo Bank pick up new riders mid season? I don't know what the UCI rules allow. It seems to me that pro-tour license or not, that Riis doesn't have the roster to be able to compete on the pro level. Without some fresh talent there's no way they can move up in the team rankings.
I'm guess that there is probably a clause in Contadors contract that his salary is forfeit if he gets suspended. that would give Riis a chunk of change to pick up some new riders that could bring some points with them.
assuming that it's allowed by UCI, who could he get? would any rider even be willing to join with the team license stuck in limbo and knowing that the sponsorship deal ends this year with little chance of it being extended.
is this an oppertunity to bring back Michael Rasmussen? somehow that seems unlikely to me. my guess is that Riis would want someone that would bring some points with them and buy his way up the team rankings, rather than gamble on the chicken. of course what does he have to loose? if anything it would get a lot of press.

I think there still is a transfer window that restricts transfers of riders that are currently under contract. I think you can sign returning dopers.

Whether they could sign M. Rasmussen mid-season, I don't know. Doesn't he have contract somewhere? I don't know the rules that well.

I do think this would jeopardize their chances of keeping their licence. I trust the UCI as far as I can throw an oil tanker and I think they've elected Rasmussen as their bad guy, as their man to blame. Saxo signing him will get the UCI in their politics mode, banning the team from the ProTour.

Cristina Watches-Onfone, a Danish Conti team. Rasmussen hasn't exactly been doing great in the last year or two either, nothing like he used to do. He's getting on, he's not doing great, and he's a political hot-potato. Wouldn't be a great move, in my view.

Why **** off Contador? He should bring Riis the Vuelta at the end of the year, he's much too good to ditch. His contract will probably have a clause that pretty much suits both parties.

I absolutely agree to not dump Contador but it's my understanding that it's become common practice for teams to have a penalty clause in riders contracts that if they are suspended that they forfeit their salary for the duration of the suspension. They still remain under contract and would still come back to the team but wouldn't collect a pay check until they're back racing. I'm thinking it was Garmin that started the practice as a way to attrack sponsors.
