bottom line: Saxo & Riis will not commit to Alberto's contract renewal when he gets back in August, since he's no longer useful for the team-in the short & long term. This ruling basically gave him a full year ban, until he finds a team willing to carry him for the next two years without the benefit of UCI points....

that's the hard truth:(

Not to sound like I told you so- but there was no way Riis was going to stick to Alberto, specially when he has "business partners & contracts" to honor, in order to salvage his team from being downgraded....
Of course is polite & fair to say publicly he would like to collaborate with Alberto in the future, but that future for Riis to be fruitful means two long years.....

Ermm I will make an avatar bet with u that Contador will ride the Vuelta in the Saxo Bank kit. It will probably be for a lower wage the 1st 2 years since Riis will need to sign other riders who can earn enough WT points, but still will be a Saxo rider (unless Movistar really comes over the top with a huge offer, but thats a risk I am willing to take regarding the bet)

The dismissal of Contador is only formal. He will be back at Saxo the moment the ban ends, the team says

Indeed. (in theory he could sign for Movistar for the huge bucks if they came with an offer but I am 99,9% sure he will tide the Vuelta in Saxo colours)

I just watch the RTVE interview with his brother Fran & he's pleased with the support that Riis & Saxo Ban are giving Alberto & they're optimistic about the chances of him riding the Vuelta with them-there are still the "other sponsors" left on what they will do about the ruling...

The big question remains as what is going to happen "after the Vuelta".....

Think Riis better sweettalk Saxo Bank.

after a vuelta, worlds, and GdL win by a cycling who with the right media propaganda might start to be seen as a martyr the sponsors will be glad to hop in :p

I think you may be right here. He should just stop protesting and talking of legal challenges. Take his punishment, but with a media-savvy advisor, dropping little bits about the "miniscule smounts", "lack of peformance-enhancing properties", "don't know how it got in my system", "worried for months", "deeply sorry for the affect on ..." You get my drift.

He could be seen as the victim, and his comeback will be watched by many, and if he wins the Vuelta, there will be tons of column-inches written about it. Enough to warm the cockles of any sponsor's heart.

Possibly another point for Saxobank to retain their PT license is that Contador was riding for Astana when he flunked the dope test.

So does the Astana team have to cough up winnings related to Contador (my understanding is that the tour winner gives the award mney to his team members).

If UCI will blow up the sport in the air, they simply deprive Team Saxo Bank their points and license.
If a rider can ruin it for all teams and their employees with a turnover of 10,000,000 euros a year, the sport did not survive.
This is a google translation

That's a problem with a 1-rider team.

But apparently it's unfair to actually have a downside to such team planning. Team benefiting from his points regardless of when they were scored, sure. When they are rightfully under threat cue the cries of how they didn't know and shouldn't be responsible.

They got the license based on 1-rider, they should lose the license the same way.

Talk of blowing up the sport is more cheap drama.

this is the key thing in your statement. Besides that it really sucks for the team that Nuyens is injured. He would earn them a lot fo nice points in the coming month. Their two captains are out. That will ofcourse hurt.

they wont be able to be a factor in the cobbled classiscs now but I reckon they will be able to do decently in the ardennes with Kroon and C.A.Sørensen.

Means that all those riders who "could have scored points had they not had to support Contador" have failed to score a single point so far.

I don't know how the point system works but various riders have already gotten some nice results (for their standards). Like Navarro coming 15th in PN, or 3rd in the Tour Méditerranéen, I just don't know if they get points for that.

I wish UCI would make a decision. it seems cruel to Saxo Bank to keep them hanging like this. I feel bad for Saxo Bank. They had no part in this other than to put all their eggs in the wrong basket. the team that should be punished is Astana but they're getting off completely free. Vino was ticked when Contador switched teams. I bet he's jumping for joy now.

I get the feeling UCI are trying not to make a decision and hope that the season in full swing will make everyone forget about whether Saxo are WT or not. Cycling media are hardly gonna pursue it!
