The thing is he never closed 50 seconds to the front of the group. The peloton was strung out. The time gap is measured to the 1st in the peloton, not the last. This is where 90% of the people go wrong because they forget this.

So while he was 1 minute behind after the flat, he was maybe only 20/30 seconds behind, MAX, after the LAST in the peloton.
After that the peloton got strung out even more and a group got away with the first few.. Dumoulin only made it back in the back/middle of the peloton. So he closed maybe 20 seconds max..

Still doesn't changes the fact that he was drafting quite a bit behind cars and motos.

The only images I saw was when he was behind neutral organisation car, and when he was almost back at the peloton, where there is always the cars of all teams.. what do you want, they are always there?

If you want to give penalties for that, then you have to give penalties to everyone that gets a flat tire, because they all do that.

U really think a reduced peleton going at max speed takes 20-30 secs to go past a fixed point?! The fact is in the last few kms of a race with the pressure full on a rider on his own would struggle to close a 10 sec gap without 'help'

No illegal pacing. At all.

Yeah I saw that, but they only showed it for a few seconds. How do you know how long that car was there?

You're stretching it a bit, huh? First there was no pacing, now they were indeed being paced but because we dont know for how long it doesn't matter? Come on.

Yes, I really have to know how long the car was there, otherwise it's not illegal pacing. Obviously.

Like I said before, if you want a time penalty for pacing after flat tires/falls. Then you can change many, many results. To begin with, Nibali worlds 2013.. :D how ridicolous was that?

I rather have someone not lose a race because of a bad timed fall (Nibali 2013) or flat tire. But maybe that's just me.

I rather not seeing someone pacing by a car for more than 15 minutes.

So then, if it were up to you, Nibali would be DSQ from the worlds 2013 result and Dumoulin would have gotten a 30s penalty yesterday?
(and many, many other results, because basically everyone who flats get paced back by his team car until they are nearly back, even at 100km to go)

Yeah of course. It's a disgrace Nibali was able to continue that race.

It's not about pacing for one minute after a flat at 100 k to go. But pacing for 5/10 minutes in a final of a stage is something inappropiate. I think there is a difference in that. But it's really difficult to mark a line in these cases.

Absolutely true.
It always amazes me how some posters here pretend only some riders benefit from this.

Tbf Dumoulin wasn't only paced by the team car, when he was on his own he was helped a lot by the motos also. That is not any different than Pinotti being paced in a tt in the Giro, which a lot posters also complained about.

it seems to me that as long as the domestiques make a decent show of killing themselves for a few km the authorities are content to turn a blind eye to a bit of teamcar pacing to get a protected rider back into position after a mechanical/crash. if the rider just got car paced the whole way without his domestiques playing any part then you can be sure they would be punished!

dumoulin announced himself today at least after some very solid time trial results, also the shorter ones are just as good for him as longer efforts like in the tour he has a great future ahead.

Stiby ftw. Gilbert and Dumoulin as his manin rivals. Can´t see Boom even in the podium with those hills. I wouldn´t discard Geraint though.
