I would love to see him hang on but it's going to be a dog fight for sure. Some of the OGE riders rode great yesterday for Chaves. He needs a repeat of that and hopefully Valverde and others could play a part if a podium position is up for grabs.

Hearts says that I'd love the little guy to be still wearing the Maglia Rosa at the end of today's stage but my head tells me that will be one ginormous ask. Whilst its always going to be an honour that you can't turn down to take the leader's jersey going into the final mountain stage; it's a very different scale of pressure for both the rider and their team from holding the jersey in the first half of a GT.

OGE will do their best to support him for as long as they can but its clearly "Advantage Nibali/Astana" at this point. The test for both Chaves & White may be that of knowing when NOT to go into the red too early when/if the MR goes out of reach so as to not risk falling off the podium or even top 5.

This will be a good education for him on many fronts, and no matter what his Giro has been a success. Let the best rider win!

Come on Chavito !! I am telling myself that maybe he blew his legs off with his attacks on Agnello which would explain his performance on Risoul.. hopefully

He has the most infectious smile I've ever seen. More infectious than Aru's smile. Colombia is really fortunate to have both him and Quintana.

To be fair, Plaza and Howson have been very good and Txurruka has done his part as well. Chaves hasn't been totally abandoned by any means.

my heart wants him to win. but my head says other wise. He doesn't seem really stellar yesterday. Barely hanging there. Today, he was reported that he was probably getting sick too (speak with stuffy nose). So today, pufff.. it will be a monumental task for him to try to hold on pink. I'm hoping he will. Today is the biggest test for him. If he can pull it off... that would be awesome. If it was Kruisjwijck who hold it, then I would be no doubt that he will be able to win the giro. My head says that Nibali is going to win it. It's just too bad... how it unfold yesterday.

Yeah he looked dead tired when he was warming up on the rollers. But it's the end of a GT and everyone is dead as well.

i was comparing him to Nibali. He seemed to bounce back well. In comparison to Chavez, Nibali looks in a better shape (and with his experience that will help).

Absolutely devastated for Chaves, really wanted him to win this Giro. At least he got 2nd though and a stage win. He can only improve from here. I'm looking forward to watching his future GT victories.

This was a great success for Chaves. He came in with a top 10 or maybe to 5 in mind. Being in the fight for pink until the very end was above his wildest dreams 3 weeks ago I'm sure. We'll see him smile today for sure.

Great race for Chaves. As with Kruijswijk, he will win a GT. The Vuelta this year is a shout.

My heart is breaking for little Chaves, I was screaming at my TV, it was terrible to watch him crack and slip out of pink :( but he can definitely win a GT in the future

Great ride by Chaves, so deserving like others but just too much for him today, I hope and trust we will see him contending again with a little more success. Still much to be proud of for this Giro.

Had he stuck with Piti and Uran, he'd have won that. They were right behind, Nibali wasn't that strong, It's just that he completely cracked.

Not much he could've have done either way, if he had been strong enough, he'd have crashed out in the descent so Nibali would still win. Hope he's happy with podium.

Great ride by him. Not yet good enough to hold level for three weeks, but I think he will get there. Also, love the way he talks. Sounds like a smart, down to earth guy with very positive outlook

Oh boy - on the 2nd climb there was a camera shot of Chavito's face so revealing compared to NIbali's :( ....... I Knew he was going to be in trouble for the remaining Ks ahead......

Nonetheless ---Congrats to my compatriot Chavito Esteban Chavez - the future is bright for you!!! Now get a well deserved rest, get ready for the Olympics & conquer La Vuelta :)

Yeah, I thought he was at the limit the whole day. Didn't want to say it earlier. Great job, all-in-all. Second place and a day in pink is a great result for him.

Yeah, I almost knew it when I saw his face.
He rode and awesome Giro, won the queenstage and was strong for 3 weeks, he only had one bad day (that wasn't so bad).
He'll be the man to beat at the Vuelta, go Chavito!
