He's progressing from a GT to GT. It's time to specifically target one and fully commit to.
And that finishing fading across the third week should be corrected.
Just keep smiling and Lady Luck will smile back to you.

Chavito won many fans during these three weeks and I am one of them. The future of cycling with a smile, I hope he'll never change and wins a few GTs along the way. The scene when his mum and and dad go and hug Nibali when their son just lost the Giro and Vincenzo is consoling Chavito's mum is something that I will remember for a long time.

great lesson of life , great lesson of sportsmanship given by his family and by esteban.
his mother and father went to congratulate nibali very soon, he spoke like a real giant after his defeat.
a lesson for everybody, no excuses.

Oh boy - on the 2nd climb there was a camera shot of Chavito's face so revealing compared to NIbali's :( ....... I Knew he was going to be in trouble for the remaining Ks ahead......

Nonetheless ---Congrats to my compatriot Chavito Esteban Chavez - the future is bright for you!!! Now get a well deserved rest, get ready for the Olympics & conquer La Vuelta :)
+1.

He has a bright future! :)

Chavez really put it on the line on Agnello on stage 19 to break Kruuiswijk which probably made him suffer today - Anyway a 5th and a 2nd shows fantastic progression.

That is great.

Good that he learns to accept defeat.

To me, the big concern came after the press conference yesterday. Chaves had a coughing fit for like 10-15 seconds. They only showed it once, but you can tell he was sick. Confirmed today with the antibiotics he was taking. He masked it well, but all day today the smile was gone...you knew he was in trouble. All heart.

Yeah, I heard he'd been a little ill for a couple of days but he wanted to keep it quiet. Good on him for not playing it up and accepting he just didn't have the legs, for whatever the reason. No excuses - it's a 3 week race and it happens all the time.

I'm not a die hard fan of Chaves but it's impossible not to have at least some simpathy for such an humble, positive and so much down to earth. Seeing how his family congratulated Nibali it's easy to see where those values come from.

He has a lot of positives do draw from this Giro: he won the queen stage, a migthy Dolomitic tappone, he fought through some illness with tremendous consistency and he improved his best GT finish. A GT win shouldn't be so far away now if he can get a little bit stronger for the 3rd weeks.

Orica also has a positive note with Plaza and specially Howson performing so well; maybe this is the first of the australian talents that can really step it up to at least be a great domestique in Europe.

"This is the first time that my parents have come to Europe, it was my first time in the maglia rosa. I lost the jersey today that's not important. It's more important that they were here. I've only lost a bike race."
"I learnt that dreams can come true," he said. "If you keep working and never give up, then your dreams can come true. That's what I'm going to continue doing."

Pure class! He will reach the top step at some point in the future. Make your dreams come true young man!

Great progress. I wasn't expecting more than sporadic stage wins for the rest of his career a year ago, and now he looks like a real GT contender. Amazing.

I'm not so sure. He's punchy, but he lacks the stamina. Nibali blew him out of the water at leisure yesterday.

I've become a fan but it feels to me he's not going anywhere in GTs. Podiums yeah but there will always be better riders.
We'll see but he just lacks that little OOMPH.

5th at the Vuelta and 2nd at the Giro at 26 y/o means he's a true contender. I'm not saying he's going to win a GT but he sure has at least a few podiums within reach.

Also, Nibali blew him out of the water because the kid still has to improve in stamina, which is doable, and Nibali is one of the greatest ever :D

As mentioned in a previous post, he's 26 and did well in 2 straight GTs.

I thought he wasn't the type of climber to do really well in long and high multi-mountain stages and he already proved me wrong. I'm very confident he will win one or more GTs in the future if he stays healthy.

His progression was big within last year. Finally he started being consistent. Especially after that awful accident in 2013. So not sure why is not going nowhere. If anything he proved in this race that he is going somewhere.

Will he do any race in june?

Is riding the Olympics and the Vuelta. Imagine he will have one or two lead up races in July - Possibly the tour of Poland beginning July 12.

Will be very interesting when OGE decide to put all the eggs in the Esteban basket. Could have been a very different result if instead of Caleb and Luka they decide to bring the Yates twins as Doms. Still a foot in each camp, not that I blame them but a pure focus could have made a difference.
Also he just needs to focus a bit more, looking a backstage pass he didn't sleep until 4am on one stage because he was doing things for his teammates. Considering it just looked like fatigue in the final stage, gestures like that can have a heavy price. Although seeing Howson ride on the front until he pukes might mean that it pays dividends.

They have to. If they don't he should leave.

Chaves should hope Ewan progresses fast so he's put in the Tour team while Chaves can win Giro/Vuelta coming years. If Ewan is present there will always be conflict of interest, especially as Ewan is getting better as he progresses.

While Orica did decent, if Chaves rode for a team like Sky I have no doubt he would have defended his GC. Unless Orica provdes him good enough climbers, I hope he doesn't feel obliged to be staying with them just because they gave him chance.

Orica are aware of this, that is why they signed Txurruka and Plaza - not just decent climbers, but Spanish speaking climbers. Chances are Jack Haig will be ready to assist in a GC team next year and Orica will probably look to sign another decent climber as well. If that happens then Chaves should be fine.

Personally I think the rider he really missed was Hayman, they seemed to have a great mentor/pupil relationship at the Vuelta, but Hayman's classics schedule was never going to work for the Giro.

Well, he's signed till the end of 2018 so that's settled unless there is some complete breakdown of the relationship and he's able to buy his way out of the contract. I have little doubt that Movistar will be interested but whilst Chaves & Quintana have been friends; will either necessarily be willing to accomodate the other on the same team should Chaves join the ranks of GT winners ?

UK Postal has only shown they really care about the Tour ...... and have only really got it together for Wiggins & Froome. Many of their other GT ventures have been shambolic.

OGE has signed Plaza & Tzurruka but certainly they will need to do more. Howson is developing very well & they may give young Haig a run-out at the Vuelta although I would not expect a great deal. Next year he may be of greater use. If Power return to health, there is another young rider with climbing potential.

Ewan ..... will be re-signed at the end of the year but longer term, I would not be surprised if he goes elsewhere. He's a labour intensive sprinter (requires a train and therefore a diversion of more than just 1-2 rider as support) and this would be counter-productive for any GT campaign. Ewan is likely to only ever be a one-trick pony (bunch sprints) and unlikely to ever be a classics contender so his currency is frankly only going to diminish long term unless he can prove himself to be of Kittel/Griepel quality and find a team willing to put all their eggs in his basket.

Conversely the likes of Matthews are more easily accomodated under a more GC oriented regime as they require less specialised support & can survive mountains. As it is they are more centred on one day targets.
