Even if Chaves fades later in the GC, he can walk away immensely proud of his performance and hopefully that confidence will translate to next year.

He IS going "off contract" at the end of this season & these 2 stage wins at the Vuelta will most certainly see him field some offers, quite possibly better $$ than OGE. What he may choose to do we cannot claim to know. If he's after $$$, then he may go elsewhere but the drawback may be that he doesn't get the opportunities or support he's been getting at OGE.
OGE can take comfort in the fact that he HAS gelled so well with the team & the team ethos. It may well be the best career choice for him to stay for at least another 2 years.

I don't know how you can dislike the guy at this point though the longer he rides and the more success he has, people will find a reason. I didn't think that attack would stick at all when he first went but kudos to him for giving it a go.
I expect him to fade and drop serious time at some point but his Vuelta is already made. Still, interesting for him to be going so hard so early when his stated focus all year was Giro for experience/stages and Vuelta for GC.

I think he's been told "take your chances when you can IF you feel you're up for it". The attitude will most likely be as the race goes on "stick with the big guys for as long as you can" on a day to day basis and see how that pans out on a GC basis. As it is, he's getting some experience in the leaders jersey.

From the interviews I've watched - he's very pleased and happy at OGE. since they have supported him all the way when he was going through his awful injury and recovery process, so I truly believe he would love to stay as a way to thank that support, as long as he gets a good contract in place.

He's grown on me during this Vuelta. Really started to like him. Will be interesting to see how many people in this thread continue to like him once/if he becomes a serious GC contender

Was great to see that he seemed so genuinely pleased when Ewan got his victory despite his own loss, really has a good fit at Orica and would hate to see him make a poor move elsewhere and either be unhappy or suffer a change in riding style.

I think that the other thing about Orica is the number of young riders. With their new signings well over half the squad will be 26 or younger next year, which will help Chaves and the other young non Australian riders. On top of that they have guys like Stephens, White, Meyer and Hayman who all speak excellent Spanish, to help Chaves feel at home.
His fullname is "Johan Esteban Chaves Rubio". So how does Esteban come into picture. Shouldn't his name be Johan?

I've been watching the last 5 Orica youtube videos as they upload a video for every stage. Footage from before, during and after the stage. I must say they do that really nicely.
Anyways, this Chaves fellow is such a likeable guy. Always that big smile!

I expect him to lose about two minutes to guys like Valverde, but a lot depends on circumstances. If he still has the jersey, that's a huge plus, and even a shot at the podium would be enough for a few extra seconds there. And he is also lucky that the TT takes place after tough mountains, so if his recovery is good, he might surprise. The rest day allows everyone to get their act together though, so I don't know how big of an advantage recovery will be. Plus, he faded at both this year's Giro and last year's Vuelta, so he might not be ready for a GT endurance-wise, although we don't know that.
Awful. Used to be at least as bad as Landa's, but Orica improved it a bit. He did an okay showing at the TdS, where he was 2,5 minutes off Dumoulin on a similar, but a bit hillier course like the one in the Vuelta.Inquitus said:

I have to agree, he hasn't raced since TdS so didn't havee much faith in his form before the start of the race, but if he started the race in that kind of shape without riding a preparation race he should be fine and maybe he'll even get stronger, who knows.Ryo Hazuki said:how do you know he's in topform?
