How can there be any special bond between the England team and the fans, when the fans regularly treat the team like crap?

Precisely. One only need look at most people's reactions on various media outlets, insulting players and staff left and right, showing zero respect. Some stuff I read is so messed up I would cry were I an English player.

The thing is, these behaviour has been the norm since day one.

There will always be mindless 'fans' who spout garbage but that's the same for many sides both national and international. Just the other day France were booed off and were being slated by their own fans on social media and that was just half-time against Ireland.

As I said above, as a fan I expect pride and passion, I can take a defeat if those characteristics are being upheld. Sadly, England very rarely do that in major tournaments.

It's very easy to blame the fans as an easy way out. England's dreadful performances this summer have virtually nothing to do with the fans, they have been backed magnificently in this tournament, even in the 2nd half against Iceland I heard the English fans try to rally behind a failing side.

England's performance has been nothing but predictable. They really really are not that good at elite level, end of. As for the fans, ask the bar owners, police and good citizens of Marseilles how magnificent they were.

A majority of that trouble down in Marseille was down to Russian fans, even Uefa said as much, although of course there were some England fans who misbehaved. I had friends down in Marseille, I trust their version of events.

Unsurprisingly I heard of next to no trouble in Lens, Saint Etienne and Nice.

Really. You tube is your friend. England again embarrassed themselves. When the Russians arrived it got a lot worse, agreed on that.

Going tonight for the @400 on Iceland over France. It's not scared money and will make for a good party on the win.

Tabloids.
The British are used to them, but for an outsider, what is written there is abnormal. Heroes one day, paria's the next.
I don't read the tabloids, but I do interact with many an English fan.

It will be even more exciting when CR & co. lose. Great for the game that the Poles have the lead, now Portugal is forced to play instead of blood-sucking, time wasting, and dying all over the pitch.

You mean play like they did in all games but the last one? Jesus Christ, get rid of all that hatred.

Fans can treat players however they fancy. Just don't complain that the players aren't particularly fond of the fans later.

But yes, like gods. That's definitely what I'm saying. Yup.
I thought you were implying England fans should behave like most football fans and press worldwide.

Which is basically to treat them as gods, don't you agree? In most countries, anybody who can so much as make the national team in football, gets given to them a lifelong level endearment that almost no other human can match.

You may be unaware of the fact that the Portuguese team has been widely unpopular among supporters other than Portuguese for many years. Our distaste for this team has nothing to do with "hatred" of Portugal, or Portuguese people. Pepe, for example, should have banned from football years ago. He is a disgrace. Worst of all, when he cuts out the nasty fouling, dying, and pretending he's been hit in the face bullploppy, he's a good player.

So many useless crosses from Portugal. In spite of my portuguese nationality, I'm ashamed of his shitty football. And is Ronaldo are in India and is Ronaldo a sacred cow who can't be sacrificed for the sake of the team?

Then why extend it to the entire Portuguese team? Why Ronaldo and Co.?

And why do you want Pepe banned from football but are perfectly fine with that vampire Suárez and the lord of all things diving, Sergio Busquets. At last I think they're all disgraceful. I also strongly dislike players from other nations, but I don't try to portray the entire team as equally detestable. Throwing those many slurs at Portugal because of Ronaldo and Pepe is very weak sause, why not just criticize those particular players?

True. Crossing the ball is basically the only way Portugal has tried attacking the polish defense. The polish players look tired though, but kudos for trying to create something in the 2nd half - Portugal barely tried.

Long time listener first time caller to the Euro thread:
The only thing I know about football is my desire for Iceland to win.
I love that country (Sugarcubes, Mum, Jon Gnarr, communal spirit, etc. etc.)
Question for those who know the game:
Is it conceivable that they can win? I know anything is possible. But does anyone here who knows how the game is played think my favourite team can win this thing?
Please say yes.

You want to sub him?

Yes. Rafa in his place.

Ronaldo doesn't create occasions (either for himself, or for the team), doesn't dribble, doesn't shoot. Moreover, many of his colleagues feel the pressure to handle him the ball, instead of thinking if that's the right decision or not. More often than not, it isn't.

I mean, nothing can't be ruled out. Greece in 2004 was a longer shot. But in principle, no.
