Seeing how Tiberi cracked yesterday as a result of his crashes and how Bernal is now on the ropes (& how Ayuso exploded since rest day) , I reckon modern pro-cycling at these speeds and intensity offers very little opportunity to 'recover' after a crash.

It's something worth considering here. One of the most ridiculously unlucky Rog crashes was in the opening team time trial in the 2019 Vuelta when a burst swimming pool flooded the road and took out Jumbo. I'm thinking if that sort of misfortune happened now (especially repeated tumbles) , a bonk later in the race would be more likely due to lack of recovery.

No it's like 95%+ severity of the crash itself.

Stage 2 was a GC stage that year and he immediately made the first group.

Sad they're not even considering TdS and he goes to Tignes. The Tour route except for Ventoux stage is so bad for him, not sure what's the point of focusing on Tour.

You do realize he's not riding for free, right? And that RBH are there to make money? And that Red Bull's goal is to sell drinks?

The Tour route looks almost too easy tbh if we ignore the huge elephant in the room which is the peloton's inevitable "we're gonna all crash hard" aspect of the first 10 stages (sans the ITT).

Who knows, maybe this time things will go his way.

TdF is the biggest money maker for any team there. It's the most exposed cycling event every year. Just being there means money (sponsors,..), actually being there is mandatory if you want any real money from sponsors/owners. Being there and win something (stages, being in the fight for GC, other prizes,....) means even more money. So going there with the best you have is not an option..it's mandatory if you like having a job and a pay check.

Ralph Denk said 80% of the team's earnings come from the Tour every year. It's why his DNF last year was such a huge deal and it's why his Giro DNF here is not a huge deal.

That's the cold materialistic truth.

I wonder what are the TDS earnings are as a percentage 😅 but he should sneak it in at some point!

How does that work out? The vast majority of a team's income is an annual budget from sponsors.

No idea. He said it when he talked about the reasons for hiring Rog in the first place, about how they'd wanted to podium the Tour with Hindley but couldn't so now they wanted something better.

I mean Denk is pretty blunt and not exactly a people person.

I'm not entirely sure either, but the sponsorships are structured by the races they compete in, and the sponsorship fees command 80% of the budget during the Tour is what he means maybe.
But as a WorldTeam, their participation is neither in doubt nor their choice.

My best guess is that he means that Red Bull (the drinks company) get 80% of their exposure from the sponsorship during the tour. That is the reason for income to the team, but it is not, of itself, income for the team.

His family was robbed during the Giro:

In quotes collected by Slovenian news outlet Siol from an interview with Sportal, Roglic's wife, Lora Roglic Klinc, revealed the details of a shocking incident that took place during the stage 10 individual time trial finishing in Pisa. “In broad daylight, someone broke into our camper van," begins her retelling. "They smashed a window and stole a laptop that had been hidden under the bed, a mobile phone that Primoz had brought me from the Tokyo Olympic Games, some cash, and two rings.”

Thankfully, Roglic's wife and their two sons were at the roadside supporting the Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe leader as he rode a solid effort against the clock in Pisa, so they did not come face to face with the robbers. It's also worth noting that with the camper van not having any visible ties to the five-time Grand Tour winner, it's unsure whether or not the robbers knew who they were stealing from or not.

If they had come face to face with the robbers they might still have their stuff unless we assume that the robbers were willing to seriously injure or murder someone to rob a camper van. I‘d assume they robbed it because it was unattended.

It happened to Jasper Stuyven's wife during Paris-Roubaix back in March as well (they stole bikes and a laptop). https://road.cc/content/news/bikes-stolen-jasper-stuyvens-wife-during-paris-roubaix-313543

As for Rog, he just posted about the Giro on Insta:

He seems fine.

If he wins Suisse before TdF RedBull gets a lot more exposure as commentators would hype up his good form otherwise he would labelled as "crashed out of Giro".

Roglic has clear issues when things gets hectic, going from Tignes to those chaotic first stages of Tour ain't gonna bode well. He needs more time in the peloton and to develop some chemistry with the team. His team has been nowhere this Giro except for Pellizzari.
Imagine if he crashes again in Tour and RedBull/Roglic get nothing out of it like Giro. All the blame for Redbull's bad season will fall on him.

Ok but the opposite stands as well. Imagine he crashes on TdS and can’t even start TdF…

Not to mention he must get to the Tour as well prepared as possible and I think, admittedly far from being an expert on these matters, doing TdS is suboptimal preparation when you have already done Giro.

Why are we talking about Roglic like he is just some marketing tool and not a prolific winner? Why should he be obliged to go to the Tour? He is not some random rider who the team can force to do anything. In the future he will be remembered for his wins not for his Tour de France sponsorship obliged participations.
If I am Roglic I am not going to the Tour. I am resting, healing and preparing properly for the Vuelta where I can achieve the record of victories.

He can crash in Suisse race and not start TdF. That would be even worse then start TdF and crash there. Plus he's hurt, he needs time to recover and there will be no real time to prepare for Suisse AND TdF. I have very little hope for TdF anyway. He won't make it without crashing and when he crashes...well, it's over again.

Roglič is a simple employee, like everybody else. Good paid one yes, but that's it. He will do what bosses say and bosses want him in TdF. Hell i think Rog also wants to go there.
